今天繼續(xù)聊詞匯——

geyser——

1. 這個詞的詞源很有意思，來自于冰島語里的一個噴泉景點(diǎn)；

2. 英文釋義：a spring that throws forth intermittent jets of heated water and steam，表示間歇噴出一股股熱水和蒸汽的泉水。

3. 這個英文釋義中有幾個詞匯比較有意思，我們也稍微提一下——

   /.動詞+forth表示……出來，比如throw forth就是拋出去，forth from表示out of從……出來；

   \.intermittent表示斷斷續(xù)續(xù)的、偶爾的；

   O.jet詞源是法語動詞jetter，表示拋擲，jets of就表示一股啦。

thermophilic bacteria——

1. 英文釋義：of，relating to，or being an organism living at a high temperature與生活在高溫中的有機(jī)體相關(guān)的，所以 thermophilic bacteria就是有名的嗜熱細(xì)菌啦；

2. 前綴thermo-，詞源為希臘語thermos，表示與熱相關(guān)的，常見在學(xué)科名稱中，如thermology表示熱學(xué)，thermodynamics表示熱力學(xué)等等；

3. bacteria其實(shí)是細(xì)菌的復(fù)數(shù)形式，而單數(shù)是bacterium，這個詞尾變化來自于拉丁語，一個詞尾變化居然能保存這么久，說明這個詞真的不常用啊，哈哈！

bring to life the graphs……——

1. bring something to life可以形象地翻譯成賦予某物生命，表示，使某事物顯得形象生動；

2. 這里值得注意的是，因?yàn)橘e語the graphs of optimal temperature for enzyme function過長，所以這里后置了，賓語后置在英語各類文章中不要太常見，所以，英語閱讀最忌諱一字一頓地讀。

optimal temperature——

1. 這里指最適宜溫度，optimal有同義詞optimum，比optimal更常見；

2. 名詞形式：the optimum表示最佳結(jié)果、最好的條件，something is at an optimum某事物處于最佳狀態(tài)；

3. 另外兩個相關(guān)的常見詞組：maximum temperature最高溫度，minimum temperature最低溫度。
