Capot (Spanish for car hood) is a site-specific installation designed by Martin Huberman & El Estudio Normal for the 2023 version of the Lollapalooza Festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina, dwells on the relationships we, as humans trace with the objects that surround us, in this particular case cars and its car hoods.

The large-scale installation focuses on the particular ways people adopt parked cars. Within that stillness, when cars abandon their reign of the streets to become another static element on the urban landscape, we discovered a natural proliferation of uses, magical appropriations that render our daily life. Everyone has used a car hood. As a place to sit while waiting for a friend outside a venue, as an improvised table to have something to eat or to lay over a cup of coffee while we scroll through our phones, or just to break the pace of the boardwalk to text at ease. Some, who dare to dream beyond that, lay over warm hoods watch passing planes, stargazing, kissing, intimate or just to have a little nap.

Capot is built from those moments that nurture objects with experiences and stories and transform them to harness a second life. Its 95 Volkswagen Gol car hoods are structured within the festival epicenter as a beacon for encounters and re-encounters for music wanderers, as support stage for resting in between concerts or just as a predilect scenario for hanging on a marvelous moment.

Capot is the first episode of Autopartes, the most recent formal research project from Estudio Normal, inspired by the auto parts industry, fundamental thrust of Argentina's national economy, and pride developer of the hectic pulse of its cities streets. The formal potential of the catalogue of parts that shape an automobile is still permeable to a gaze that seeks to rediscover it, willing to push it towards new uses, enhancing the classical relationships between design, industry and the potential user.

The design of the installation shelters notions of low environmental impact, harvesting existent resources, car hoods included, while minimizing the fabrication of new pieces specific pieces for the build. The office re-signified the traditional "catch and release" fishing technique within its design focus, allowing most of the pieces to go back untouched to the production line. "This way we grant that the efforts needed to produce the ephemeral have low repercussions on the conditions of the eternal".
