It’s possible, but you’ll need a teacher. Most people on average progress one level every?4–6?months in an immersion situation, with full-time classes, plenty of native speaker interaction, (host family situation), and a lot of social activities with mates who have made a pact to ONLY speak English.
I once had a student in this situation. He wanted to do just what you have asked about. He was a B1 and passed the CAE with an ‘A’ after 2 months of intense study.
Here’s what he did:
He lived with an English speaking family, took classes at our academy from 9–12, ate lunch with?dedicated?mates, and then had 3 hours of intensive training with yours truly in the afternoons from 1–4. But he didn’t stop there. He stayed at the academy after our afternoon classes and organised his notes for no more than an hour. He then went to galleries, museums and any exhibitions he could find where someone was giving a talk. Then he went home to his host family and had dinner with them. What might surprise you is after dinner he didn’t stay home with his nose in his books. No, instead he went out to the pubs with his dedicated mates and enjoyed ‘casual conversation’.
He did this every day of the week for 2 months solid. On weekends he took advantage of the many tours and activities offered by the academy, spent time with his host family and continued to go out to the pubs. He claimed that he was able to consolidate what he absorbed during the day by having relaxing and pleasant casual conversation with mates in the pub.
He was an average guy intellectually speaking. He wasn’t a language genius. He just lived breathed and ate English for 2 months solid. He was?exceptionally?dedicated and in the end, succeeded.
So yes, it’s possible. However, that is the only time I have seen a student progress from intermediate to nearly advanced in such a short time in my entire 25 years as an English teacher.
