I would like to talk about a character named Nina Sayers, who is the protagonist?of the psychological horror film Black Swan. The character is played by award-winning?actress Natalie Portman, whom I find strikingly beautiful. And to be frank, that’s partly the reason why I saw the film in the first place, back in 2012, if my memory serves me right. However, I didn’t get it at that time. In fact, I was utterly bewildered?by the plot. It was only recently when I stumbled upon a movie review?of Black Swan that I decided to re-watch?it. This time, it absolutely blew my mind. The character development of Nina really struck a cord with?me.

Basically, the movie centers on?this seemingly perfect but repressed?ballerina called Nina who still lives with her jealous and controlling mother at the age of twenty eight. At the beginning of the film, Nina attempts to try out for this duel role as a white - black swan. Although Nina is a perfect fit for white swan, the director believes that she is too innocent to play the dark and sensual black swan. However, as the film progresses, Nina gradually comes to terms with her desires, ambitions and aggression. Eventually, she gets the role and manages to win the audience over with her Black Swan performance.

As to whether I like this character, I’m actually in two minds about this, because the film is a kind of?melodrama?--- a rather over-exaggerated version?of reality with Nina’s personality kind of going from one extreme to another. But I would say that Nina is a very complex character of great depth. And it’s really satisfying to see the character transforming from suppressing her desires to embracing her dark sides. Nonetheless, in real life, I think it’s more sensible to take it slow and avoid taking things too far.
