On the?2011 recording?of “Nervous Young Inhumans,”?Car Seat Headrest’s Will Toledo took a break from singing to explain his SAT-level word choice in the chorus: “galvanistic.” “Galvanism is the concept of the obsolete scientific theory that there was a kind of electricity flowing through our bloodstreams,” Toledo deadpanned over a blasé bass line. The glossed-up re-release of the track, which ranks among the poppiest songs in Toledo’s catalog, features no such explanation. It even omits that mouthful “galvanistic” line altogether.
Toledo用淡漠的低聲線死板地說道:“Galvanism is the concept of the obsolete scientific theory that there was a kind of electricity flowing through our bloodstreams.”
Of all the refurbished songs on?Twin Fantasy, the 2011 Bandcamp album remade for a forthcoming release on Matador, “Nervous Young Inhumans” might benefit most from the new polish. Toledo swaps out the original’s anemic guitar riff for a sparkling, robust tone that throws a glam rock sheen on his fevered power-pop. That shift in fidelity leads him to sound a lot like the Killers, though he stops just short of adopting Brandon Flowers’ vocal bombast. If “Nervous Young Inhumans” edges close to glam rock, it's the shyest glam possible, a tortured internal monologue screamed beneath a broken disco ball. Toledo isn’t dancing with anyone; he’s just remembering what it felt like to want to dance with someone long after the party's over, “You never lifted your voice/You never raised your hands/You never showed me your inhuman,” he sings. This might be an ode to deflated desire, but its soaring melodies and pounding drums play like a hunger that’s been fully realized.
他唱道:“You never lifted your voice/You never raised your hands/You never showed me your inhuman.”
