China has always witnessed a small number of failed heroes, determined fighters, unsupported men of armour and shield engaged in fierce battles, and mourners weeping for and consoling dead dissidents. The Chinese people tend to swarm to winners but avoid losers.

我每看運動會時，常常這樣想：優(yōu)勝者固然可敬，但那雖然落后而仍非跑至終點不止的競技者和見了這樣的競技者肅然不笑的看客，乃正是中國將來的脊梁。

Whenever I watch a sports meeting, I often fall into deep thoughts that winners may be respectable, but the backbone of China will be the runners who have lagged behind but will keep running until they reach the end and be the spectators who will take a serious attitude towards them.

中國中流的家庭，教孩子大抵只有兩種法。其一是任其跋扈，一點也不管，罵人固可，打人亦無不可，在門內或門前是暴主，是霸王，但到外面便如失了網的蜘蛛一般，立刻毫無能力。其二，是終日給以冷遇或呵斥，甚于打撲，使他畏葸退縮，彷佛一個奴才，一個傀儡，然而父母卻美其名曰“聽話”，自以為是教育的成功，待到他們外面來，則如暫出樊籠的小禽，他決不會飛鳴，也不會跳躍。

The Chinese middle classes?adopt two ways to educate their children. The first one is that the parents let the ill manners of their kids go unchecked so much so that they will either bully their family members or get feeble-minded like net-broken spiders once leave home. The second one is that the parents frequently inflict emotional loss and physical punishments upon their children, which will make the latter into servile or puppet-like cowards; but the parents may deem such kids very good and think highly of their education. As a result, these young people will act like baby animals newly out of cage once they come upon the stage.

愿中國青年都擺脫冷氣，只是向上走，不必聽自暴自棄者流的話。能做事的做事，能發(fā)聲的發(fā)聲。有一分熱，發(fā)一分光，就令螢火一般，也可以在黑暗里發(fā)一點光，不必等候炬火。此后如竟沒有炬火：我便是唯一的光。倘若有了炬火，出了太陽，我們自然心悅誠服的消失。不但毫無不平，而且還要隨喜贊美這炬火或太陽；因為他照了人類，連我都在內。我又愿中國青年都只是向上走，不必理會這冷笑和暗箭。

I hope all the young Chinese will get over their gloom, move on cheerfully and steadily, forget those frustrating remarks, do what they can do, say what they want to say, and illuminate the darkness like a firefly even without a torch. If no man comes out with the brightness of the torch, I’d like to be the sole light. If someone comes into the world like it or the sun, we will warmly welcome and laud him and make way for him with sincere and generous contentment, for he will enlighten the mankind, including me. I also hope they will ignore the sardonic bitterness and the slings and arrows, and just forge ahead.
