PhD Students in Quantum Computing with Superconducting Circuits
1?Job description
ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) have founded a Quantum Computing Hub to jointly develop large-scale quantum computers and?foster collaboration between academic and industrial partners in the emerging ecosystem of quantum technologies.?
A growing team led by Andreas Wallraff from the?Quantum Device Lab, at the?Department of Physics?of ETH Zurich is operating a new superconducting circuits lab on the?PSI?campus at Villigen in the?canton of Aargau.?
At this site, we plan to scale up the systems developed at the Quantum Device Lab to 50 qubits and beyond.?
We will develop automated testing and characterization techniques suitable for such large-scale devices and for systematic optimization of the fabrication processes.?
In particular, we aim to advance the state-of-the-art in fault-tolerant quantum computation by realizing two-qubit gates between error-corrected logical qubits.?
To ensure this project's success and fast progress, we are looking for highly motivated PhD students in Quantum Computing with superconducting circuits.
You will become part of our young team setting up large-scale quantum computing systems in a brand-new lab.?
Like the rest of the team, you will be working closely with the Quantum Device Lab – a well-established research group – and be able to both benefit from the expertise developed there and contribute to its progress.?
You will perform collaborative research towards the realization of quantum computing technologies.?
You will get to contribute to diverse aspects of the experimental effort, both technical (design of electronics and mechanical components, building of microwave setups) and conceptual (design of experiments, planning of future research strategies).?
In the lab, you will pursue the development of fault-tolerant quantum computation by implementing error correction on modular logical qubits.
2 Your profile
You have a strong interest in experimental realizations of quantum information processing systems.
You are dedicated to pursuing a successful career in research, development, or education, either in academia or industry.
You have experience and a proven record in one or more of the following:
quantum information processing and its implementations (e.g. with superconducting circuits, quantum dots, ion traps, NMR)
experimental quantum optics and atomic physics (cavity quantum electrodynamics)
micro and nano-electronic devices and their fabrication (lithography and deposition techniques)
mesoscopic solid state physics
low temperature physics
transport measurements at dilution refrigerator temperatures
microwave electronics
digital electronics
FPGAs
Instrumentation, drivers, and software development

PhD fellowship in Arctic Ecosystem Dynamics

1?Job description
About 50 % of the total number of lakes are located above north of 60 °N, representing a prominent landscape feature in the Arctic.?
Under future warming, lake areas are expected to increase partly as warming can lead to form new thermokarst lakes from thawing permafrost, dynamically altering land and lake coverages.?
Furthermore, warming can also increase the leaching of dissolved organic and inorganic matters with runoff water from terrestrial ecosystems, brining in new sources of carbon and nutrient into lake ecosystems.?
The interactions between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are often neglected in ecosystem models but could result in uncounted feedbacks from both ecosystems, especially in the fast-warming Arctic.
The PhD candidate will investigate the importance of land-lake interactions for high-latitude ecosystems and carbon cycle and quantify regional greenhouse gas emissions from high-latitude lakes.?
The PhD project will start with coupling the dynamic vegetation model, LPJ-GUESS with Advanced Lake Biogeochemistry Model (ALBM), calibrate and evaluate the land-lake interactions based on a range of field-measured variables, and eventually assess how land-lake interactions feedback to the changing climate.? ?
2 Your tasks
Carry through an independent research project under supervision
Complete PhD courses corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS / ? FTE
Participate in active research environments, including a stay at another research institution, preferably abroad
Teaching and knowledge dissemination activities
Write scientific papers aimed at high-impact journals
Write and defend a PhD thesis on the basis of your project
We are looking for the following qualifications:
Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD project
Relevant publications, if any
Relevant work experience
Other relevant professional activities
Curious mind-set with a strong interest in ecosystem dynamics under climate change
Experiences in process-based ecosystem modelling and/or knowledge on freshwater biogeochemistry
Some experiences in Fortran, C or C++ programming
Good written and oral English skills

Jing Tang’ research group?is at the Department of Biology, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. We are located in Copenhagen.?
Tang’s group focuses on understanding high-latitude ecosystem dynamics and associated feedbacks under changing climate, primarily based on integration of process-based modelling and observations.?
By joining this group, the candidate will also be affiliated to the Terrestrial Ecology Section (https://www1.bio.ku.dk/english/research/te/), the Freshwater Biology Section (https://www1.bio.ku.dk/english/research/fbs/) and Center for Volatile Interactions (VOLT), a Centre of Excellence funded by The Danish National Research Foundation.?
Both sections and the VOLT center offer a wide range of research topics in plant physiology, terrestrial and aquatic biogeochemistry, soil biology, and ecosystem-atmosphere interactions.
We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment.?
Our research facilities include supercomputering resources for model simulations and heavy data processing.
4?Requirements
We are looking for candidates within the field(s) of freshwater biology, terrestrial ecology or ecohydrology, with good understanding of biogeochemical cycling.?
It will be a plus if the candidate has some experience in process-based ecosystem modelling.
