PWS AND HOARDING
Hoarding is another common trait with PWS.? People with PWS may sneak or steal food and stash it in hidden places to eat later in secret.? It can only take a short lapse in diligence by a carer for an opportunity to access food to arise.? And the outcome can be devastating if too much food is consumed in a short period of time.
The other form of hoarding is collecting things.? Some of the most unusual items such as shoes laces, pencils and paper receipts can become a precious collection.
Collecting, sorting and handling these items can be a form of OCD, which is common in PWS or just as a mechanism for repetitive self- soothing.? When so many things in your life are controlled by others a collection can become a sanctuary, something that is only yours.
For this reason, trying to limit the extent of a collection can be quite difficult.? Having a limited area or special place and a limit on how many items can be carried when going out is a necessity.
