二、原文
On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time. Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone shouted. 'It's two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!' I looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that moment, everybody began to laugh and sing.

1)過去完成時
①形式 had done
②用法:立足過去的時間點,向之前看,看事情的完成狀況(已完成或者部分完成)
2)詞匯 gather, accumulate, assemble, collect
gather 指人自發(fā)或有意集合在一起,也指把分散的東西聚集起來
accumulate 指成年累月,長時間的積累
assemble 指為一定的目的,把零散的東西或人收集或集合在一起
collect 強調收集
3) crowds of 成群的 ?
a large crowd of 一大群(較擁擠)
3. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes’ time.
1)in + 時間 ?表示在…時間之后 ??L37課中會再提到

4)過去將來VS 一般將來
立足時間點不同,過去將來立足過去某一時間點,一般將來立足現在

過去將來立足過去某一時間點看將來的事,一般過去看過去某一時間點的事
6)詞匯:strike, hit, beat, knock, crack
knock 是不及物動詞,后面要跟介詞后再接賓語 knock at/on the door
beat 反復地、連續(xù)地敲打 My heart beat fast with joy
hit 指有目的地擊中某人或某物,側重打中、擊中 ?Hit the ball
strike 強調急速地、用力地敲打(用手、拳頭或其他器物突然用力猛打一下) strike the clock 敲鐘
Strike while the iron is hot 趁熱打鐵
crack 指突然的重擊、往往暗示伴有響聲。The boy fell and cracked his head against the wall
