Explore Your Secret Garden in CUC

When the dancing snowflakes turn into catkins and spring bursts into bloom, the CUC campus becomes a secret garden for everyone. Hundreds of flowers are waiting to be explored.


The following reference will help you get a better understanding of the flora in your secret garden.


No.1 Winter jasmine 迎春
· Location: Near the rockery in the southern part of South Garden Canteen
· Blooming date: March 10

· Color: Bright yellow blooms and bright green stems
· Features: Usually planted atop a wall so stems can dangle or supported with a vertical framework. Unlike other jasmines, winter jasmine does not produce vines.
· Trivia: It is a popular and reliable wall shrub originating from China.
It was introduced abroad by a British plant collector who spotted the plant in a Shanghai nursery in 1844.
It is one of the “Four friends in snow” alone with plum, the daffodil and the camellia.

No.2 Dandelion 蒲公英
· Location: All over campus
· Blooming date: March 12

· Life Span: Perennial plants
· Color: Yellow and orange flowers that become a white "nap" when producing seeds
· Features: The flower head consists of very small flowers called florets.
The flower head becomes a white crown with seeds.
Stems and leaves exude a white, milky fluid when broken.
· Trivia: Its French name “dent de lion” means “tooth of the lion” and refer to the shape of its leaves. It has many other interesting names such as “clock” , “farmer’s clock” ,“schoolboy’s clock”, “tell-time” ,“time-flower” and “piss-a-bed” a name originating from its unique appearance.

No.3 White magnolia 白玉蘭
· Location: In front of the West and East Main building
· Blooming date: March 15

· Color: White
· Features:Mature plants can reach 15 meters. The flowers have 9 big petals. It has a strong and pleasant fragrance.
· Trivia: As one kind of famous early spring flower in our country, it is the city flower of Shanghai.
Magnolia has 2500 years of cultivation history and usually is ornamented in the garden.
It symbolizes purity and sincerity.

NO.4 Magnolia soulangeana 二喬玉蘭
· Location: In front of the Ming De Building
· Blooming date: March 15

· Life Span: Perennial plants
· Color: White, pink and purple
· Features: Simple, shiny, dark green oval-shaped leaves with stout stems. Flowers emerge dramatically on a bare tree in early spring. The large flowers are commonly 10 to 20 centimeters in length. The leaves expand shortly after blossoming, lasting throughout summer until autumn.
· Trivia: It is notable for its ease of cultivation and its relative tolerance to wind and alkaline soils. Some of the flowers are globular while others have a “cup-and-saucer” shape (hence then name, “saucer" magnolia). An American variety, “Grace McDade,” is reported to bear the largest flowers, with a 35-centimeter diameter.

NO.5 Mountain peach 山桃
· Location: On the eastern side of the Li De Building
· Blooming date: March 15

· Color: White or Pink
· Features: Ovoid or nearly round petals, 10 to 15 millimeters long and 8 to 12 millimeters wide. It has spherical fruits that are light yellow and covered in light fuzz.
The hard and heavy wood is used in delicate crafts and as walking sticks.

· Trivia: It is mainly found along China's Yellow River basin, Inner Mongolia and northeast China.
Its seeds, roots, stems, leaves and sap can be used for medicinal purposes.
The nuts can be made into toys or used in rosaries, while its seeds can produce edible oil.
NO.6 Forsythia 連翹
· Location: On both sides of the Bai Yang Road
· Blooming date: March 15

· Color: Bright yellow
· Features: Deciduous shrubs typically growing to a height of 1-3 meters with rough grey-brown bark, a four-lobed flower, and a fruit which is a dry capsule, containing several winged seeds.
· Trivia: The flower is named after William Forsyth, a Scottish botanist.
Forsythias are nicknamed the Easter Tree because its branches appear to be waving in praise of the resurrection of Jesus.
Forsythia sticks are used to bow a Korean string instrument called ajaeng.

NO.7 Viola prionantha 早開堇菜
· Location: All over campus
· Blooming date: March 18

· Features: Heart-shaped, scalloped leaves. It lacks noticeable stems and the foliage and flowers appear to rise from the ground;
Flowers are formed from five petals: four are upswept or fan-shaped petals with two per side, and there is one broad, lobed lower petal pointing downward.
· Trivia: Viola is the largest genus in the violet family, containing between 525 and 600 species.
It is one of the top three bedding plant crops.
When newly opened, Viola flowers may be used to decorate salads or in stuffing for poultry or fish.

NO.8 Apricot flower 杏花
· Location: On the west side of Li De Building
· Blooming date: March 20

· Color: White or pink
· Features: A small tree, 8 to 12 meters tall with a spreading canopy. It has ovoid leaves with a rounded base, a pointed tip and a finely serrated margin;
· Trivia: Its name is believed to have Armenian origins. The flower is thought to have originated in Armenia, a region of Asia where it is native.
The trees are sensitive to temperature changes during the winter season.
It has appeared in many Chinese poems and stories. The term "expert of the apricot grove" is still used as a poetic reference to physicians.

NO.9 Sakura (Cherry blossom) 櫻花
· Location: Early ones can be found behind the Cui Yongyuan Oral History Research Center. Late flowers cover the South Garden community and the Bang Zi Jing dorm for male students.
· Blooming date: March 20 for early blossoms; April 10 for late flowers.

· Color: White or pink
· Features: 3 to 5 flowers blooming on each branch. The petals are elliptical-ovoid in shape. The fruits are nearly spherical, with a diameter of 0.7 to 1 centimeter.

·Trivia: Symbolically, the flowers represent “l(fā)ife,” its brief bloom reminding us of the shortness and beauty of life.
The trees are sensitive to temperature changes during the winter season.

NO.10 Trigonotis peduncularis 附地菜
· Location: The lawn on the eastern side of the Main Building
· Blooming date: March 25

· Color: The flower head has a corolla that is light blue or pink.
· Features: Stems usually numerous and much branched at the base. The flower is 5 to 30 centimeters tall, short strigose.
· Trivia: Soaked as herbs in hot water, the leached solution is blue-green fluorescent in the sun.

NO.11 Amygdalus triloba 榆葉梅
· Location: In front of the Main Building, near the Ming De Lake, South Gate Square (Rose Garden)
· Blooming date: March 25

· Features: Shrubs, rarely trees, 2 to 3 meters tall, with numerous, outspread branches.
· Color: Branchlets gray, grayish-black or grayish-brown. The flower petals are pink.

· Trivia: The plants have strong resistance to salt and alkali.
As its leaves look like that of the elm and its flowers are similar to those of the winter-sweet, amygdalus triloba gets the Chinese name YuYeMei as a reference to those two species.

NO.12 Bothriospermum Chinese Bunge 斑種草
· Location: On the west side of the South Garden Canteen
· Blooming date: March 25

· Features: Annual or biennial herbs, with furry leaves and stems. It has straight stems and ovoid leaves.
· Color: Mainly blue or white flowers.
· Trivia: It is unique to China and is not artificially introduced and cultivated. It has medicinal value and can be used as medicine.

NO.13 Prunus × blireana cv. Meiren 美人梅
· Location: In front of the Main Building
· Blooming date: March 25

· Features: Deciduous rees or shrubs. Flowers open before or at the same time as leaves grow.
· Color: The flower normally has 5 petals that are white, sometimes purple-veined, occasionally greenish
· Trivia: While resistant to cold it is sensitive to air pollution, pesticides, fluoride, sulfur dioxide and automobile exhaust.

NO.14 Nanking cherry 毛櫻桃
· Location: On the west side of the Starlight Supermarket
· Blooming date: March 25

· Features: Shrubs are usually 0.3 to 1 meters tall
· Color: The branches are purple to grayish brown. It has pink or white petals.
· Trivia: This species is widely cultivated in temperate East Asia for its flowers and edible fruit. The Nanking cherry symbolizes "nostalgia."

NO.15 Orychophragmus violaceus 二月藍
· Location: CUC Grove
· Blooming date: March 27

· Features: 15 to 60 centimeters tall with straight stems that are simple or branched at the base and often branched above, straight, glabrous or sparsely to densely pilose.
· Color: The petals are deep purple, lavender, or white
· Trivia: Orychophragmus violaceus has a strong self-cultivation ability. Once sowing, it can be self-generated into a community every year. It is one of the most common wildflowers in northern China in the early spring.

NO.16 Lilac 丁香
· Location: The road between the school Infirmary and the North Gate; the northern side of the CUC Grove
· Blooming date: April 1

· Features: Shrubs or small trees. Around 15 centimeters in height.
· Color: White petals.
· Trivia: There are many festivals around the world that celebrate the Syringa vulgaris.
Rochester, New York, which has held its Lilac Festival since 1898, the longest-running in North America. This celebration is held in Highland Park, which has the most varieties of lilacs at any single place, many of which were developed in Rochester.
There is also the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, Massachusetts, which celebrates "Lilac Sunday" every May, when the Arboretum shows off its collection of over 422 lilac plants, of 194 different varieties. Lilac Sunday is the only day of the year when picnicking is allowed on the grounds of the Arboretum. Mackinac Island, in Michigan, which celebrates a week-long lilac festival and lilac parade each June.
The lilac symbolizes "purity" and "brightness."

NO.17 Prunus cerasifera 紫葉李
· Location: Culture Square,Near the rockery in the southern part of South Garden Canteen
· Blooming date: April 1

· Features: Usually solitary flowers, sometimes two-flowered fascicles
· Color: Purple leaves with pink petals.
· Trivia: Prunus cerasifera are especially popular for ornamental use.

NO.18 Peach blossom 桃花
· Location: Zhong Lan Apartment
· Blooming date: April 2

· Features: The flowers bloom before the leaves fully emerge.
· Color: Pink petals
· Trivia: The fruits are popular on picnics and the peach saplings are commonly encountered wherever the pits are discarded. The double-flowered cultivars are used ornamentally. The flower symbolizes "romance".

NO.19 Geminate speedwell 婆婆納
· Location: The lawn on the eastern side of the Main Building
· Blooming date: April 3

· Color: Blue and purple (most of them are purple)
· Features: Four radiating petals that are ovoid in shape, with two purple and white stamens.
· Trivia: Adaptable to different environments around the world. It also has some particular uses in Chinese medicine: cure of rheumatism, kidney disease and malaria.

NO.20 Malus Spectabilis 海棠
· Location: Staff quarter, outside the North Gate, near the Rockery
· Blooming date: April 5

· Features: The bark is purplish brown, blackish brown, purplish black, or purple, with scattered pale brown bumps.
· Color: Pink, red, or white petals.
· Trivia: Flowering quinces are widely cultivated as ornamental shrubs for their attractive and abundant pink, red or white flowers.
Other species differ in terms of their leaves which can be furred.
