Presentation Abstract
Given the critical role of vegetation in Earth system dynamics and in providing essential ecosystem services for the society, it is of fundamental importance to monitor, assess, and predict vegetation dynamics. Emergent evidence from remote sensing data has in general pointed to an increasing trend of global vegetation greenness, a key proxy for vegetation photosynthetic capacity and other ecosystem functions, since 1980s. This phenomenon is often termed as “greening Earth” or “vegetation greening”. In this talk, I will provide an overview on past and current efforts quantifying the patterns and drivers of the last four decades’ vegetation greenness changes, and on understanding the temporal change in the linkage between vegetation productivity and climate.
