I've never understood. If they can't marry commoners, then... who can they marry? There are no Japanese aristocrats anymore, and I'm assuming non-Japanese royals are out. Are they exclusively supposed to marry their cousins, or something?

It’s not some male dominated bullshit, it’s part of a carefully made plan to cripple the Imperial family and keep them very limited. After Japan lost the war unconditionally to the US, the US made sure to turn the Imperial family into a ceremonial position and make sure that they could never recover.

I’m not very knowledgable, but yours sounds like a good analyses of the purpose of these rules, yet it still is male dominated bs. I’m sure some smart people could have found a way to achieve the same goal, but without discriminating women.
