The main purpose of this course is to discuss two topics based on the results of previous assignments. Yeah, we’re GONNA have a discussion. The two topics are:
TOPIC 1:Independent Originality
TOPIC 2:Critical Creativity
Remember last time we talked about the objectivity of description? If you have thought about this question carefully, it will be very helpful for the teaching of today's content. In the last task feedback, classmate a mentioned that“Things are objective, but people will add their own subjective emotions when facing a certain thing”, classmate B thinks that“To describe as objectively as possible means to be fair and independent of one's opinions”, classmate C also emphasized that“It is not whose opinion can convince who, but whose opinion can better reflect the true nature of things.”. These are“Objective descriptions” of several central aspects of the last task; we find, and these three perspectives are, more or less, representative. Now that we have reached the“Discussion” stage, we inevitably have to involve“Ideas”; and since we are going to discuss, there must be a“Discussion” process involved.
1.?be original and independent
The rigor we talked about last time is an academic attitude that should be present in the teaching of EAP, and one of the aims that the course pursues and strives to achieve. For example, does this mean“The ability of something to limit someone's freedom very much” or“The quality of being impossible to change or persuade”(c.f. “The quality of being stiff, fixed, or impossible to bend”) , or“The qualities of being careful and accurate.”. If after careful investigation, comparison, and the original information in the induction and abstraction after the final extraction, combined with their own understanding of the formation of a new understanding and insights, then we can really understand the rigour of what we say, whether it is rigidity or strictness or precision (preciseness) is one of the important meanings of the course.
The beginning of the process must be an individual act, even if this lesson involves“Discussion,” before each member of the discussion must be with his or her own work to communicate with others. Originality can sometimes be a collective achievement, but it must be built on the effort (or effort) of individual members. Therefore, independent opinion is innate and necessary for originality, originality is the only way to prove an individual's or team's point of view later -- only you or your team know how your proposition is“Proven” or“Disproved.” Otherwise, how can we persuade others in the discussion?
2.?Critical Innovation
In this way, we can also review the tasks we have done and learn from them. Criticism is not a derogatory term we usually understand, nor is it exactly“Criticism”. In the academic context, it is mostly a neutral word, in the study of this lesson, I think it is a positive word. Criticizing one's own or others' opinions, and criticizing the existing consensus, is of course an important way to create new knowledge and opinions on the basis of sufficient evidence.
Take, for example, the tasks we do. For example, to learn English, it is inevitable to pay attention to the gains in the process of the task, rather than to finish the task as soon as possible. Translation itself is not just the expression of the two languages in a different way, but the screening and extraction of information and the induction and abstraction of language content in the process of translation are the embodiment of the rigor of learning itself. If you want to criticize yourself for getting something out of the last task, just ask yourself: Was My task completely original? Or do you just find a Baidu translator, copy and paste?
In fact, we can do better. In the process of criticizing ourselves for the accomplishment of our tasks, we form our own opinion on how learning can best help us to improve our real language, which is the real gain. Some of them have done the task formally, but in fact they have only done the “Teacher’s”task; such criticism and thinking, after this discussion, can let us constantly improve ourselves and go further.
