but it is acceptable for an european car maker to downgrade their own products so much, just because the chinese customers do not seem to care about it?

They also downgrade in the European Market as well, compared to what is required for the the American Market.

@Gary Bao I’m not very agree with your opinion. Your explanation may be the part of reasons( why Passat’s result is disappointed (in China) ), but it is totally not convinced enough. In fact, some products which came from other companies (like Toyota, Nissan, BMW etc ) also took this exam in 2019 and they got quite better result.
Some of these products are also from so-called joint venture: 1.Levin(雷凌), which is produced by GAC Toyota(廣汽豐田); 2.and Avalon(亞洲龍), which is produced by FAW Toyota(一汽豐田); 3.as well as BMW 3-series from BMW Brilliance (華晨寶馬) .These three products got “G(good, best result in C-IASI)” as the result in major tests.

@Gary Bao Chinese people can not take important positions in the research department. In fact, Germans make the decision of what material to use. Passat is as expensive as Camry and Accord in China. It should be as safe as these cars. Usually, German engineers in Chinese VW think Chinese people love VW no matter the car is good or not.

John Koops agreed, however this only applies to the Chinese car market as Volkswagens safety in other countries is very high, such as the USA and other European countries. Check out IIHS crashes of Volkswagen cars, based in the US. Unsure why they would cut corners just for the Chinese car market though..

Arjan Singh: It‘s the same in the US: check out the newly introduced small overlap: Volkswagen cars didn’t score good. They fixed it. One would assume that they really improved overall safety of their cars. But: then IIHS tested passenger side small overlap. Passat again didn’t score good. So all they did was to strengthen the driver side, because that was called out by IIHS. But saved the dollars to strengthen the passenger side. They build their cars around certifications and tests. And if they can’t meet the standards, they cheat.

The other reason is Chinese car companies make car joint ventures with foreign manufacturers. They easily acquire technology, which has led many Chinese manufacturers to build their own brands and use cheaper materials to build knockoffs. So many people tend to buy those cars because they are much more cheaper and offen fully loaded compare to the original. A Chinese coppycat CR-V hover H6 cost $16k, a real CR-V cost $23k. Chinese people like cheap yet loaded car. Therefore, how to complete with Chinese brand and meet Chinese need? Cut off things that customer can''t see. Safety.
