Job description

We are looking to recruit a Research Assistant on the research study Admission Impossible? School Choice in European Cities funded by the Norwegian Research Council, NFR, and University of Bergen, UiB, 2021-2025. The research study is a pioneering development into school choice in Europe and consists of three integrated projects. The first project is a qualitative inter- and intra-national study of school choice politics in fourteen cities in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France, and England. The second project uses a mixed-method approach to examine students’’ preferences for and experiences with choice in four cities in Norway, through a survey, in-depth interviews, and focus groups with students from different socio-economic backgrounds. The third project is a quantitative study, which aims to examine the causal effects of school choice at the upper-secondary school level on academic achievement, ethnic segregation, and segregation based on socioeconomic background in Norway.

In the role as Research Assistant, you will be responsible for a range of research duties across the three projects such as collecting data, and holding and transcribing interviews, and supporting the team conducting a survey. You will support the research team with the drafting of reports, articles, and other outputs, and in responding to recent policy announcements and developments related to its mandate. You will also manage the projects’ website, the School Choice Hub. We will provide you with an opportunity to conduct your own small research project on a topic related to school choice.?

The successful post holder will be expected to reside in travel distance to UIB, Norway, to participate in the scholarly activities of the university and to conform to the rules and regulations that apply to the position.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Undertake various administrative duties needed to gather data, including arranging for distribution and collection of a survey, and contacting interview persons??

  • Interview students in their first grade of upper-secondary school in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, and Stavanger

  • Interview politicians, policymakers, civil servants, and stakeholders in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, and Stavanger (and potentially in other European cities)

  • Maintaining the School Choice Hub (the project website).

  • The post holder will carry about any other duties as are within the scope and purpose of the job as requested by the team.


Requirements

Essential:

  • MA in the social sciences, education policy, or a related field

  • Research skills in qualitative methods, including interviewing, within the social sciences/education policy.

  • Written and other communication skills, including reporting and contextualising research results.

  • Interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a part of a team.

  • Abilities to prioritise a varied workload and meet deadlines while maintaining quality.?

  • Proficiency?in Norwegian

  • Advanced English proficiency level

Desirable:

  • Experience with managing a website, including blogs, pod casts, and other out-reach communication

  • Experience with conduction surveys

  • Knowledge of quantitative research techniques and methodologies within the social sciences.

  • Publication record

  • Proficiency in German and/or French

Personal characteristics:

  • Ability to work systematically and result oriented

  • Good cooperation and communication skills

Job description

Increasing favourable outcomes suggests that health imaging-based AI approaches can become useful clinical tools in areas such as non-invasive medical image characterisation, prediction of certain quantitative imaging biomarkers, staging of lesion spread, stratification of patients, selection of most appropriate therapies and clinical prognosis.

We are seeking Research Associate to work in this project. The post is jointly funded by the EU H2020 CHAIMELEON and the EU IMI DRAGON projects and aims to demonstrate for first time that AI can be used to enhance reproducibility of radiomics features and parameters extracted from cross-vendor and cross-institution CT-MR-PET/MR imaging data.


Duties and responsibilities


  • To take initiatives in the planning of research

  • To direct the work of small research teams

  • To identify and develop suitable techniques, and apparatus, for the collection and analysis of data

  • To conduct data analysis

  • To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times

  • To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings

  • To write reports for submission to research sponsors

  • To present findings to colleagues and at conferences

  • To submit publications to refereed journals

  • To provide guidance to staff and students


Essential?requirements

  • Must hold a PhD in Computer Science, Medical Physics, Bioinformatics, Bioengineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience

  • Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant

  • Must have a strong machine learning background with proven knowledge and track record in one or more of the following research areas and techniques: generative adversarial models, federated or distributed machine learning, deep learning and its applications to medical image analysis, imaging biomarkers extraction, diagnosis and prognosis.

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, enjoy working in collaboratively and be able to organise your own work with minimal supervision and prioritise work to meet deadlines.

  • Preference will be given to applicants with a proven research record and publications in the relevant areas, including in prestigious machine learning, computer vision and medical image analysis journals and conferences.

This is a Full-time and Fixed Term post until August 2024 based at the Royal Brompton Campus.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694 - £39,888 per annum.
