【閱前提示】本篇外語原文摘自蘇格蘭經(jīng)學家理雅各先生翻譯種花家論語而成的《The Chinese Classics · Confucian Analects》。理雅各先生出生于1815（清嘉慶二十年），一生致力于中西方文化交流，其翻譯注釋儒墨道三家經(jīng)典，終成“The Chinese Classics”系列。不過需強調(diào)，理雅各先生雖然非常令我敬佩，但不得不說，由于其是傳教士，因此著作中不可避免有一些夾帶，還望小伙伴們注意辨別。黑字是原文，彩字是我做的備注。

曾子曰、慎終追遠、民德歸厚矣

The philosopher Tsang said,'Let there be a careful attention to perform the funeral rites to parents, and let them be followed when long gone with the ceremonies of sacrifice;-- then the virtue of the people will resume its proper excellence.'

【山譯】哲人曾子說過，要十分注意父母葬禮的舉辦，即使很久之后也要不斷舉行祭祀。只有這樣做了，人民的道德水平才會恢復到其最好的時候。

【01】THE GOOD EFFECT OF ATTENTION OF THE PART OF PRINCES TO THE OFFICES TO THE DEAD:-AN ADMONITION OF TSANG SHAN.

【山譯】部分貴族重視人民生前身后事所帶來的良好影響——一個來自曾參的勸告。

【山注1】此句為“遼人版”版本，而“南天版”中PRINCES變?yōu)榱薙UPERIORS，即上級長官。我揣摩了一下，感覺遼人版這個貴族君主要比上級長官好一點，故此處使用遼人版。

【02】終，'the end',=death,and遠,'distant'have both the force of adjectives,='the dead'and 'the departed'or 'the long gone'.

【山譯】“終”是結束的意思即死亡?！斑h”是遙遠的意思，兩個字是精神層面的形容詞。可譯為死亡與離去乃止遠去。

【山注1】人死為終。此處特指父母的去世。而“遠”指的是祖先。

【03】慎and追mean,'to be careful of,'to follow',but their application is as in the translation.

【山譯】“慎”和“追”意思分別是小心慎重以及跟隨。它們在語言中的應用與此翻譯中的一樣。

【山注1】慎終追遠：慎終者喪盡其哀；追遠者祭盡其敬。

【04】厚,'thick',in opposition to薄,'thin',metaphorically,=good,excellent.

【山譯】厚的反義詞是薄，引申一下，厚是好與優(yōu)秀的意思。

【05】The force of 歸,'to return',is to show that this virtue is naturally proper to the people.

【山譯】“歸”的意思是返回，這是在說人民的美德自然而然的達到適合的狀態(tài)。
