?Virtuous Companion (德伴子; Dé-bàn-zi; とくばんし; Tokubanshi) is a short piece of Táng music for which only the transverse bamboo flute (橫笛; héng-dí) score survived and was preserved in the Hakugakyu Tekifu (博雅卿笛譜) - a.k.a. Shinsen Gakufu (新撰樂譜), Hakuga Chouchikufu (博雅長竹譜), etc. The surviving score shows two sections of the music and is keyed in Dorian mode on B (盤涉/般涉調(diào); Pán-shè/Bān-shè diào). Another version of this piece, keyed in Dorian mode on E (平調(diào); Píng diào) once existed but has been lost.?
Different homophonic and homonymic forms of the music's title "德伴子" were used across different Japanese historical sources - such as "德伴字 (とくばんじ; Tokubanji)" and "德貫子 (とくかんし; Tokukanshi)" - perhaps due to mistranslation or misinterpretation as it was transmitted in kanji. No reference for "德伴子/德貫子/德伴字" can be found in Chinese historical sources. However, the "Miscellaneous Records on Songs from the Music Bureau (樂府雜錄; Yuè-fǔ Zá-lù)" briefly mentioned a short piece titled "得寶子 (Dé-bǎo-zi; とくほうし; Tokuhōshi)" - literally to mean "Acquiring a Treasure (i.e. Treasured Companion)" - said to be composed by Emperor Xuán-zōng of the Táng dynasty (唐玄宗) shortly after the notorious Yáng Guì-fēi (楊貴妃) became his imperial consort. Possibly, "德伴子/德貫子/德伴字" were misnomers of the title "得寶子" and the music that survived was in fact the same piece composed by the Emperor Xuán-zōng (or a similar one), although this remains to be verified.
?Transcriptions of Virtuous Comapanion include one by the musicologist Allan J. Marett that was published in 1976 and another by the ryūteki (龍笛) player Hasegawa Kagemitsu (長谷川景光) published in 2018. This video features a reinterpretation of this music after consulting both of these transcriptions, rendered for full-ensemble.
