Ahh, yes – it’s always better to hit the tourist spots with a full crew of family. It turns everything into an adventure. Hope they weren’t too hard on C. That’s a heavy dose of Spanards to deal with.I was just in Beijing last week and must have gained two pounds eating my way through the city.?

No, I’m not so brave, I tend to stay away from “special” dishes that take courage to eat. I prefer special dishes like Beijing duck, roujiamo or spicy big head fish. Things with words like fermented or hairy get a wide birth.

That’s my lady’s hometown and guess what her surname is…I’ve been to Qufu more times than I can count. I’ll be up there again in about a month. I like the food, the family time and the three Kongs (those three places you visited) are kinda cool. Otherwise…it’s just a normal smallish northern Chinese town. Qufu locals get tickets at a greatly discounted rate.?

Check it out next time you go! It’s not far from the Sun Yat-Sen mausoleum. I think the official name is Ming Xiaoling mausoleum.

Me too! It has been the first and only time I’ve seen them. They were still steamed in the usual big bamboo baskets, dumpling and small basket together. I think it’s genius. No more spilled soup because the dumpling skin got stuck to the cloth in the bottom of the bamboo basket!

Ah Shanghai was one of the few pleasant surprises during our city tour last year. I really do hope to visit there again someday. It was wonderful for my father to go up the third highest building there (dont remember the name!!). At first we didnt plan to do so but then I asked him for fun “You want to go up there?” and he was just like “Up there? Yes, yes, yes!!!!”. So much enthusiasm with a 75 year old man

Yes, I had problems with taxi drivers almost everywhere except in Chengdu, and Shanghai. Beijing also wasn’t as bad as expected, but the ones in Hangzhou were the worst. Almost always did we try to hail a taxi to us for around 15-20 minutes. One time, it was pouring like hell and none of the taxis would stop.

Oh I didn’t know it was famous abroad! In Beijing, when the autumn arrives, there is a massive peregrination to the mountains around the city to “see the red leaves”, as they call it.

I got teary-eyed reading this. You wrote such a LOVELY message about your mother/n/law. It’s important to have a close relationship and we are lucky when we have that. I have been divorced for quite a while. My ex/husband and I were meant to be friends, we still send each other cards and small gifts for birthday and holidays. The same with his mother, she is turning 94 and I just bought her a gift and some chocolates for her birthday. It’s important to honor people who have been very loving in our lives! So, a big Italian hug goes to YOUR special mother/n/law today!

This is a great post and it’s nice to hear that you have good relations! My mother-in-law is quite understanding and helps me out a lot as well and our relations are really good but I’m always thinking that might be because we can’t fully communicate due to language barrier so she can’t really tell me what to do directly we still don’t have kids but hopefully that wouldn’t change the balance we already have.

Lucky you! She seems like a very nice, open minded women. That, or C’s previous taste in women casts you in a good light.I can’t imagine having one of those “other” Chinese MIL. Stuff of nightmares. Did your MIL move in post-baby? I couldn’t handle that no matter how nice she may be! We rent my in-laws an apartment in the building next to ours. Those 300 meters make all the difference in the world.My MIL is also a very nice lady who leaves me alone. It helps that I’m basically an alien to her with my strange foreign ways, like walking around my house in socks or hugging my wife. And she only speaks her local language, which is close to Mandarin but still leads to a communication barrier. Just wait until your little one starts talking. My daughter speaks in 3 languages and just picks the easiest word out of the three languages, Laolao gets confused when L1 speaks English to her and I have to translate.

Haha, thank you! I do think I’m nice, but she doesn’t give me any reason to be rude or mad at her to start with, haha.I have that situation but with my own parents. They were here for 2 weeks when the baby was one month old and I’m planning to spend two months in Spain when he’s about 1. I don’t think there’s going to be pressure, although somehow I think my own mum is not going to be as respectful of my decisions as my mother in law is. My MIL never questions anything that I do because she thinks “that’s how foreigners do it”.I also don’t understand why someone would kiss a baby on the mouth. In China and in Spain it’s definitely considered weird. I also don’t get when people kiss their pets. I love my baby and I loved my dog but I don’t want to eat their drool if I can avoid it, hahaha.

哈哈，謝謝你的回復(fù)！我確實(shí)認(rèn)為我還不錯(cuò)，但是她也并沒(méi)有給我任何理由讓我從一開(kāi)始就對(duì)她無(wú)禮或生氣，哈哈。我也有這樣的情況，但是是和我自己的父母在一起。當(dāng)寶寶一個(gè)月大的時(shí)候，他們?cè)谶@里待了兩個(gè)星期，我打算在他一歲的時(shí)候在西班牙待兩個(gè)月。我不認(rèn)為會(huì)有壓力，盡管我覺(jué)得我媽媽不會(huì)像我婆婆那樣尊重我的決定。我的婆婆從不質(zhì)疑我做的任何事情，因?yàn)樗J(rèn)為“外國(guó)人就是這樣做的”。我也不明白為什么有人會(huì)親吻一個(gè)嬰兒的嘴。無(wú)論是在中國(guó)還是在西班牙，這絕對(duì)被認(rèn)為是非常奇怪的。當(dāng)人們親吻他們的寵物時(shí)，我也很是不理解。我愛(ài)我的孩子，我也愛(ài)我的狗，但是我不想吃他們的口水，如果我能避免它對(duì)我表示親熱的話，哈哈哈。
