LUCY CAVENDISH COLLEGE

Founded in 1965, Lucy Cavendish College’s purpose has always been to provide opportunities for underrepresented groups to study at Cambridge. Having previously been a college for mature women, from October 2021 students of all genders aged 18 and above will be able to study here, and we will aim to become the first Cambridge College to admit a majority of our students from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds. For academically outstanding students seeking an unrivaled education and a community that reflects modern society, Lucy Cavendish offers a unique environment in the heart of the historic university that all can truly call home.

Our College community is welcoming, supportive and stimulating. An informal community, anyone can walk on the grass and enjoy our beautiful gardens. Students, staff and fellows come together on many occasions, such as at free talks and lectures in College.

ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES AT LUCY CAVENDISH

Lucy Cavendish College will be your home while you’re studying at Cambridge.? The College is centrally located and your room will be on site or nearby.

We offer a wide range of accommodation, from characterful Victorian houses through to modern apartments.

All accommodation is ideally situated for easy access to the College, the University departments and the historic city centre of Cambridge. All rooms are fully furnished and fully equipped. We can also give you some tips about what to bring, as well as what’s here already, so you can settle in as quickly as possible.

Lucy Cavendish aims to accommodate all its undergraduate students for at least the first 3 years of their studies, subject to availability. In addition to our single rooms, we can offer one bedroom apartments and studio flats suitable for couples and two bedroom apartments suitable for families.

From 2021, women who for religious or cultural reasons need to be in women-only accommodation can be given a room in ‘sets’ which are women only.

Similarly, mature students and those who prefer a quieter environment may express a preference for the Histon Road rooms which are not on the main campus itself.

We are an informal college, so you will meet and get to know other students, staff, fellows, tutors and supervisors in the café, dining hall and social spaces, and at talks and special events. The gardens are always beautifully maintained, and we welcome you, your friends and your family to enjoy them.

We have a gym on-site and we run free or subsidised exercise classes at the College including yoga. The state-of-the-art University Sports Centre is just up the road and we are close to the Rugby Club and Tennis Club too. There are lots of sports activities you can join at every level of experience and fitness.

CLUBS AND SOCIETIES AT LUCY CAVENDISH

Our students act and direct plays, go to films, join any number of sports teams, learn to row from scratch, publish their writing, make music, learn coding, volunteer and raise money for local charities, debate politics, become student reps and learn to dance – amongst other things.

We encourage you to join some of the clubs and societies because we believe that having a healthy life balance makes you more successful as a student and brings you friendships and contacts you wouldn’t otherwise have had. If you can’t find the club you want, the Students’ Union in College can help you set it up yourself!

The Art Society is a relaxed space to be creative! Anyone is welcome, no previous experience required! All pencils, pens, pastels, paints etc., provided. A couple of trips each year to local art galleries and museums are on the agenda.

The Hughes-Lucy Cavendish Badminton Club provides a great opportunity to meet other people from another college and it is really good exercise. There is no obligation and no experience required. All equipment needed is provided.

The Boat Club, at the start of every Michaelmas term, recruit a group of (usually) complete beginners, and pay special attention to bringing the novices up to a high standard of skill, getting them fit and bonding together, making lifelong friends in the process. Lent and Easter terms bring the excitement of Cambridge’s ‘Bumps’ races as well as rowing on the Thames in the Head of the River Race.

The Cavendish Chorale is a friendly all female student choir. They welcome everyone who enjoys to sing, with and without previous choral experience. They sing from classics to musicals to pop. They usually have two concerts a term, including our Carols Around the Tree concert, a fun concert at Lucy’s Garden Party and pre-formal hall concerts. Feel free to go to a rehearsal and see what you think!

The Cavendish Chronicle is a termly print magazine from Lucy Cavendish College. It privileges the diversity of voices at our College as well as other creative minds from the University of Cambridge. The magazine is student-run and provides an amazing opportunity to learn how to manage, edit and create a magazine. It also encourages creative writers and artists by giving them the chance to be published.

Lucy Netball is a bunch of true novices who come along for great chat with a bit of fitness. They have training once a week at Chesterton Community College, a match either Saturday or Sunday morning and brunch together afterwards. Commitment is very low and every level of ability is welcome!

We also have a range of subject-based societies, such as Lucy MedVetSoc and ?The Lucy Cavendish Law Society that hold academic talks and social events, provide welfare support and mentoring, and revision supervisions throughout the year.
