HOMERTON COLLEGE

Homerton is both the largest and the newest College in the University. With a 250-year history, for much of which we were an acclaimed teacher training college, we received our Royal Charter in 2010 and now offer every subject at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Located conveniently near Cambridge station, our?spacious grounds provide a welcome respite from the city centre and allow us to offer on-site accommodation to all students who want to live in.
We are proud of our well-deserved reputation as Cambridge’s friendliest College, our talented, diverse and enthusiastic?students, and our ability to provide a home from home during your time at Cambridge.

Welcome to Homerton

ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES AT HOMERTON

We are proud that our rents are amongst the lowest in Cambridge and there are no additional charges for utilities or wi-fi, for instance. Rooms may be occupied during term-time only, from arrival Travel Day to 4pm on departure Travel Day. The room charge is based on the number of days in the term.
Undergraduate accommodation?
Undergraduate accommodation at Homerton is all on site and of high quality.? All accommodation is made up of individual study-bedrooms, with access to a shared small kitchen for snacks. All rooms have their own toilet and shower apart from some in the 19th-century Cavendish Building which students often choose for their character.
All incoming undergraduates are guaranteed a modern room in West House and undergraduates can have a room on the College site for your whole time at Cambridge – including those on 4-year courses. Rooms are designed to work in as well as sleep so there is a desk, space for books and, of course, everything you need to get online. They are safe places, with their own room keys and a card key system for getting into your accommodation block (so strangers can’t!).

Postgraduate accommodation?
Homerton has built new postgraduate accommodation in quiet surroundings on the main College site – a sort of campus within a campus. Most resident graduate students will live in Morley House and Harrison House, which offer self-catered, en-suite rooms. We have a?video tour of Morley House available on YouTube.
Accommodation is arranged in groups of five rooms, sharing a fully-fitted kitchen, and Homerton’s graduate common room (‘MCR’) is located in Morley House.
We offer rooms to all full-time postgraduates whenever possible, but unfortunately we can’t accommodate part-time students.
We are able to offer a few cheaper rooms to graduates?in?the other accommodation blocks, though rooms may be smaller, and only offer small ‘gyp-room’ kitchens, for snack preparation.
Facilities?
The Porters’ Lodge is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so there is always someone close to contact in case of worry. Our Porters are a friendly bunch and will help in any way they can.
The?College Library?is also open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.? It is a modern, well stocked, open-plan facility with over 40,000 books covering most academic subjects. ?We provide material to support undergraduates taking Part I of the Cambridge Tripos in all subjects.? As students progress they tend to make more use of Department and Faculty libraries in their academic subject, but there’s lots of specialist books in the College Library too.
Homerton library has a number of special collections, the most notable of which are the historic Children’s Literature Collection and the Multimedia Collection (with DVDs, CDs and printed music – sets of parts are available for hire).
THREE THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT HOMERTON

We know how to make you successful!?
Homerton Changemakers?is our unique programme to help students thrive and live meaningfully and successfully, at Cambridge and after graduation.? Changemakers is optional for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.? The programme fosters four essential qualities:?Responsibility, Resilience, Action & Enterprise, and?leadership.? As a Homerton Changemaker you’ll have the chance to hear from entrepreneurs, musicians, charity founders, business leaders and others, in a structured programme that will challenge you in unexpected ways and expose you to fascinating ideas.
Biggest and newest?
Homerton is the biggest – and the newest – of all the Cambridge Colleges!? We’re the biggest because we have a large graduate population as well as a large number of undergraduates.? Homerton has existed as an institution since 1768, but only became a full Cambridge College in 2010, having previously been a teacher-training college.? We still have lots of PGCE students – contributing to that large number of graduate students – but you’re as likely to encounter an economist, a lawyer or a natural scientist as a trainee teacher these days.
We’re an oasis?
Nowhere in Cambridge, Homerton included, is more than about 15 minutes’ bike ride from anywhere else – but because we’re outside the city centre we provide a real ‘home’, away from the bustle of the city centre.? We’re not on the tourist trail: at Homerton your College is truly yours.
