From the last part of the conversation the fort are really empty besides those people you can see,I think this idea is to trick sima yi to think that it's an ambush because if there are no soldiers inside and they dare to open the gate wide open for them definitely smells fishy...

Basic Sun tzu strategy. When can fight, pretend you can't, when can't fight, bluff that you can. It is kind of silly that Sima Yi falls for this, as Sun Tzu art of war should be first thing that came up in his mind. Wasn’t Zhuge Liang a generation older than Sima Yi? Kinda wondering why they are depicting them in the opposite fashion. Hence why Sima Yi was so reverent of Zhuge Liang’s stratagems.

as much as i enjoyed this show, the guy who played zhuge liang sucked.. especially if you compare him with Tang Guoqiang from the 1994 version who had a flawless performance in it..

What's funny is that historically, Zhuge Liang was a pretty mediocre military commander. He was kept as a statesman, not as a general. Most of his military campaigns failed, and a lot of things are attributed to him that shouldn't have been. For instance, the empty fort strategy. It wasn't Zhuge Liang who did this historically, it was Zhao Yun.

Random question, but does anyone know how authentic the music and instrument Zhuge's playing actually are? Is that the sort of thing that might actually have been around in the third century? I'm interested in ancient Chinese music but it's tough to find anything definitive.
