Project description

For many school children, mathematics is a source of frustration because of the experienced difficulties with it. This led to increased research on the underlying cognitive processes of different mathematics skills and at the same time, research on personalized learning approaches to foster particular math skills. However, both research traditions are often too little geared to one another.?

In this project, we focus on numerosity and fraction comparison, both important precursors for math and affected by domain-specific and domain-general processes, that is, processes involved in many other – also non-mathematical – skills like inhibition.?

First, we will examine whether there are different profiles of children that excel or underperform on one or both (domain-specific and domain-general) dimensions. Second, we will construct adaptive diagnostical tests, that is a test in which the problems are adapted to the child in real time, taking into account both domain-specific and domain-general dimensions. Third, we will evaluate whether children learn better when they are presented with exercises matched to their current ability on both dimensions.

You will be responsible for designing and conducting the research and analyzing the results, with a high focus on quantitative data analysis. You will carry out your research within the faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at campus Kulak in Kortrijk. Your research is fundamental in nature with a strong emphasis on theory building. You will publish in scientific journals and present the results of your research at international conferences. You write a PhD dissertation on this topic. You will be supervised by prof. dr. Bert Reynvoet and prof. dr. Fien Depaepe.

Your profile

  • You have a Master’s degree in educational sciences, psychology, computer sciences, biomedical sciences, speech-language pathology and audiology sciences or a related discipline but with an emphasis on educational and behavioral research.

  • You have distinguished yourself during your study career.

  • You have a special interest in mathematics learning and the use of technology and ICT in education.

  • You are interested in the use of statistical and computer sciences’ techniques, as well as in the use of innovative data collection techniques.

  • You are creative and result-oriented.

  • You are able to work both independently and in an international team.

  • You have a very good command of English (oral and written), and preferably also of Dutch.

Dr. Fatwa Abdi,將于2023年夏天加入香港城市大學(xué)能源與環(huán)境學(xué)院擔(dān)任副教授。他于2013年在荷蘭代爾夫特理工大學(xué)化學(xué)工程系獲得博士學(xué)位,在美國麻省理工學(xué)院(MIT)和新加坡國立大學(xué)獲得碩士學(xué)位,并在新加坡南洋理工大學(xué)獲得學(xué)士學(xué)位?,F(xiàn)任德國柏林亥姆霍茲材料與能源中心(HZB)的太陽能燃料研究所副所長,課題組組長以及senior scientist。他是Royal Society of Chemistry(MRSC)、Electrochemical Society(ECS)和International Society of Electrochemistry(ISE)的成員,并獲得荷蘭Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities(KHMW)頒發(fā)的Martinus van Marum獎。曾指導(dǎo)7名博士后、11名博士生和眾多碩士/學(xué)士/訪問學(xué)者。累計在Nature Communications, Nature Materials, Energy and Environmental Science, Advanced Energy Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, ACS Energy Letters和其他雜志上發(fā)表文章逾100篇。

PhD position in Physics-informed Traffic Management in Intelligent Transportation Systems

Project description

Modeling and simulation are powerful tools for developing and validating traffic management and control strategies in urban and freeway environments. At the same time, data-driven methodologies and machine learning offer new opportunities for optimal traffic management strategies but often they lack physical intuition, which creates obstacles towards large-scale deployment and public acceptability

The motivation of the proposed project is to explore physics-informed solutions, combining established knowledge from modeling approaches with the capability of machine learning to capture complex patterns observed in real-world cases. The goal is the development of robust traffic management strategies for highway (e.g. ramp control) or urban (e.g. perimeter control) networks focusing on minimizing the time that users spend in the network and their energy consumption while homogenizing traffic flows. The role of connected and automated vehicles as mobile sensors and actuators within congested environments will be explored. Modeling and simulation will be used as tools for assessment.

Your profile

You ideally have a Master’s Degree in engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, or related fields. You are highly motivated, and determined, and you have excellent communication and writing skills (proficient spoken and written English is required).

Moreover, the following skills are expected:

  • Strong background in mathematics, optimization and/or control sciences

  • Interest in traffic engineering

  • Hands-on experience with programming on machine learning and/or data analysis

  • Experience in traffic simulation and modeling

  • Team working and communication skills.

  • Knowledge of the German language is a plus

You are expected to:

  • Publish in top journals and scientific conference

  • Participate in research proposal preparation

  • Guide/follow semester projects at BSc/MSc level

  • Teach within the SVT course program

  • Contribute to the operation of the group and the Institute.

  • You enjoy working in an interactive international environment with other doctoral students, post-docs, and senior scientists, referring continuously to practical problems and solutions. This position will be available as of September 2023 or upon agreement.
