PWS AND ELOPEMENT

Elopement (running away) is a scary and dangerous aspect of life with PWS.? Because of opportunity or curiosity, elopement is generally motivated by the search for food or for older people, to escape the sense of restriction in their ever day life.

It is important to inform local law enforcement of the situation as difficulties can arise if the person is found stealing from stores or breaking into homes to access food.? It can also be devastating if parents are seen to be neglectful.

The worst situation of course is the resulting serious injury or death through lack of road sense or inappropriate trust of strangers because of a preoccupation with the goal.

Parents of children/adults who elope need to be constantly alert at home, often requiring locks on windows and alarm systems, and need to be even more vigilant when out.
