Toilets in rural China and why I love them! I remember telling my Chinese teacher in Shanghai that I was moving to rural Qinghai. I remember her facial expression. Her first sentence was "But Mili, have you seen the toilets there?". She comes from a city, and whenever she travels to rural areas, her biggest concern is the toilets. My teacher is Chinese, but also many foreigners have a somewhat strained relationship with the toilets here - with Chinese toilets in general.

Most toilets in China are squat toilets, and although squatting while doing your business is natural and has loads of health benefits, it''s a lost and forgotten art in the west. So the squat toilets are scary, and even scarier when you have to squat over a dark deep hole full or other humans'' waste. Hold tight to your phones and your keys and your small children.?

Living with the rural style toilet for some years now, I have gotten used to them. I have come to really appreciate them, actually. Although it is sometime scary to go to the bathroom at night, and annoying in the rain, these toilets are quite amazing. These toilets are integrated in a system, and used as fertilizer for the fields. Nothing is wasted, and nothing is sent away for someone else to deal with. The waste is ours, and we use it. Isn''t that quite beautiful? Plus, when you go in the night, you can see the stars.

I actually really like squat toilets, as long as they’re clean (and most of them are clean in the cities). They’re convenient because you don’t need to sit on anything or make contact with any surfaces/lay down a toilet seat cover. And like you said, squatting is the natural position for going to the bathroom.

My favourite ''toilet'' was when I was building a house in the middle of nowhere, we didn''t have running water or anything in place as the building process happened. I would wander away from the site and go to my favourite bent tree, just the right size to sit and hang over, if you know what I mean. The sun would be shining and the birds singing and it was just a rally peaceful moment.

I’ve been going to china since 1994. To this day, I have never used a squat toilet. After watching this video, I hope I never do.

Hahaha, think about it. once you squad you squad the whole life, people should have get used to it already, doesn''t matter of the older folks or not. of course, there would be assistance for the disables or elderlies who have foot or leg problems.

When I was a kid, I remember visiting my great grandma''s apartment in Wuhan and she had a squat toilet. Since she was too old to squat, they had something like a walker with a toilet seat to move over it when she was using it.

After living in America ?? for so long, I can no longer squat. I had thought it was because I got arthritis. Now I know it was because bending knees is like language, use it or lose it. Yes, my life style has been Americanized. Two things that I can no longer tolerate when I return to China, cigarette smoke and public rest rooms.

I actually loved the chinese squatting experience. Much healthier for the body. In rural Greece also there are still some few squatting toilets, even the elementary school of my younger daughter has one. But here they are connected to the normal water and waste system, so you can flush and the waste will go to the purification plant. In Greek it''s called "Turkish toilet" τουρκικ? τουαλ?τα.

I enjoyed this video. I''ve never seen such a good design for emptying the "dry hole" variety. I like the idea of dry soil for cleaning.
Rural England 1950''s sextion. We had the rare & great luxury of indoor flushing toilet! (Dad was the sewage works manager) He gave the processed sewage to neighbouring farmers as fertiliser. It''s very good fertiliser, which also contributes to soil structure.
At school there were metal bins with seats on, got increasingly smelly as the week progressed. Emptied every Fri evening. I''ve a reasonable idea of how smelly Miriam''s cleaning job was in China.

Neighbouring hamlet there was a central block for 8 houses. 2 sets of long boards with 4 holes in each & individual doors & screens between. "Residues" were flushed into a cess pit with a bucket of water. Grandparents had outdoor flushing toilet. For night time "emergencies" there was a "Po" under the bed, but the bed was so high I was scared I wouldn''t be able to get back into it. School had paper, but in those days it was more like "parchment paper". Most homes recycled newspaper - torn into squares & hung on the back of the door with string.(Stained your bum grey!) The most primative & only "squat" I''ve ever used was as a GP. A Shetland Croft house. Taken to the byre (shed for domestic animals) with a hurricane lamp, & left to add my contribution to the pile from the sheep.
Even now, I occasionally relish the luxury of an indoor flushing toilet. - You don''t have to hang on until heavy rain stops, & there''s no smell at all.?

現(xiàn)在，我偶爾也會用著奢侈的室內(nèi)馬桶，不用等雨停才能方便，也沒有難聞的味道。
