After Alexander Albon, Austrian Christian Klien is another Formula 1 driver to join the ranks of this year’s DTM field. The driver from Vorarlberg will be racing a McLaren 720S GT3, run by the JP Motorsport team, in three events. In 2022, driver and team will then embark on a full-season DTM campaign.

The JP Motorsport team, based in Erkelenz in the German Rhineland region, is describing its participation in the three DTM events at Zolder (6-8 August), the Nürburgring (20-22 August) and Assen (17-19 September) as the “absolute highlights” of the upcoming season.

For Christian Klien, who raced in Formula 1 for Jaguar, Red Bull and HRT between 2004 and 2010, the races mark his return to the DTM platform at which he already raced in junior single-seater categories in the early years of his career. For instance, he scored four race wins in the 2003 Formula 3 Euro Series. In the same year, Klien also won the prestigious Formula 3 invitational race at Zandvoort. These achievements helped him to graduate into Formua 1 the following year.

Klien, who has also experience in endurance racing and in Australian Supercars, mainly raced in GT competition in the past years. His anticipation of the DTM is huge: “I'm really looking forward to the challenging season that lies ahead! The DTM races will be the absolute highlight for me this year. There we can compete with the best teams and drivers in GT3 racing and show what we are capable of. With McLaren we have found an excellent partner for this and we are very much looking forward to working with this renowned manufacturer.”
