Primary cilia, as depicted here, are cellular antennae with a crucial role in animal development. Defects in their formation can cause developmental disorders and other diseases in humans. Using an unbiased screening approach. Kumar et al. identified DENND2B protein as a key regulator in the development of primary cilia. The authors found that the presence of DENND2B at the base of the primary cilia affects the length of the cilia and their ability to function properly. Understanding the relationship between DENND2B and primary cilia formation has implications in disease paradigms from developmental disorders to neurodegeneration and cancer.

Photosynthesis is an ancient biological process in which phototrophic organisms transform solar radiation into metabolic energy. G. phototrophica, the first phototrophic member of freshwater bacterioplankton Gemmatimonadetes, acquired photosynthesis related genes through a horizontal gene transfer from a Precambrian proteobacterium. Qian et al. visualized the first structure G. phototrophica’s photosystem, which contains a central reaction center surrounded by two concentric light-harvesting rings. The research shows that G. phototrophica has independently evolved its own compact, robust and highly effective architecture for harvesting and trapping solar energy.

The undersurface of a giant Amazonian waterlily shows the vascular structures that confer strength and buoyancy. The Klyuchevskoy volcano erupts over Russia's far eastern Kamchatka peninsula revealing an active magmatic system beneath one of the world’s largest volcanic groups. Journeau et al. analyze seismo-volcanic tremor sources, shedding a much-needed light on the active part of the volcano group's vast magmatic system. The researchers imaged the subsurface volcanic system and provide potentially vital information on the volcano's processes prior to eruption. This approach could be used to delineate the active systems of volcanic groups worldwide and provide a better understanding of the deep roots of volcano-magmatic systems.
