My sister Bryony is an overachiever. A barrister like Amy, the two of them seem to enjoy discussing my shortcomings. I am a failed veterinary surgeon. I have been working to qualify for twelve years and was sacked from my last placement over a problem involving dog anaesthetic and rabbit antibiotics. Bryony also rides horses for Berkshire, has two children – a boy and a girl, of course – and has been happily married to an airline pilot for years. Bryony is the son my parents never had.

‘It all comes so bloody easily to Amy. She never had to deal with being useless at anything. I’d always just been the second child who’d never live up to the first. Then, when they died in the accident, it was too late to prove them wrong…so now what am I supposed to do?

Whilst drunk on a vintage bottle of champagne, I decided to show them all and go on a road trip with a broken robot.

It was a couple of days before I got round to packing. One day was lost to hangover, the next staring at guidebooks in my father’s study, trying to decide if I should take any with me. I confess I was probably a little reluctant to fly, too. I had been since my parents’ accident. In general, I avoided it if I could.

While I waited for my new backpack to arrive, I decided to work out a daily budget and an itinerary. Tang clanked out to join me, and I crouched down next to him, placing my hands on his little metal shoulders. ‘You were right over there by the willow tree, not five weeks ago. Do you remember?’

‘O-pen?’ He turned the word over…It seemed to be a new one to him, though it shouldn’t have been. I knew he knew the word. I was starting to wonder whether he was deliberately obtuse at times.

I wiped Tang’s leg where the stream of oil had taken a diagonal path. Then I heard a cough. I looked up to find my neighbour, Mr Parkes, in his own front garden, looking worried about what I might do to the robot next and attempting to stop me before it happened, so he wouldn’t be the one to see it.

He adjusted his dogtooth-tweed old-man fedora and hoisted a pair of Felco secateurs from one hand to the other. I knew they were Felco because Amy made me buy some for her when she had a gardening phase. She didn’t want to be seen in the front garden with the rusty old pair we had inherited from my parents with the house, the same pair my grandparents had probably used before them.

My new backpack arrived the next day, smelling of warehouse and containing an excessive amount of little packets of silica gel. As fast as I bundled things into the bag, Tang pulled them out again, each item of curious interest to him for about then seconds, then discarded. Until he found my sunglasses.

‘Tang, stop it, will you?’ I snatched the glasses from him and put them back in their case. I headed as fast as I could down to the garage and rooted through my poor excuse for a toolbox. I spotted a sealed plastic packet containing a pair of shiny new gate hinges. I frowned and tossed them aside, picked up a roll of gaffer tape and skipped back upstairs to the bedroom. I found Tang on the landing and making his way towards the stairs.

I was just about to shut his flap and seal it when I noticed that the cylinder next to his heart, which when I first saw him had been full, now had liquid only two-thirds of the way up. The crack in the glass seemed to have got bigger, too.

そのままフラップを閉じてガムテープで留めようとして、タングの心臓の隣にあるシリンダーの中身が、最初に見た時には満杯だったはずなのに、三分の二に減っていることに気づいた。ガラスの響も大きくなっている。

‘Tang, what does this fluid do?’

Tang couldn’t see over the edge of his body, so I held up a hand mirror for him and pointed to the cylinder. He lifted his grabbers, indicating that he didn’t know, though from the way his eyes darted about nervously I wasn’t sure I believed him.

He blinked a few times. ‘Yes,’ he said, then shut the flap and kept his grabber across it.
