On "Stay Away", Charli XCX's excellent single from earlier this year, the UK electro-pop singer built a slow-burning kiss-off of a pop song with low-lying synths, industrial textures, and a whole lot of shadowy atmosphere. We've seen what she can do with darkness and melancholia; new single "Nuclear Seasons", then, comes across as lighter at first, as her impressively versatile voice squiggles and squeaks around the song's neon architecture. There's still plenty of heaviness to this one, though-- check that menacing low end, reminiscent of Ladytron's most grandiose and lush moments. Like "Stay Away", "Nuclear Seasons" is unavoidably reminiscent of the synth-laden electronic pop dreams of the 1980s; but also like its predecessor, that debt to the past is immediately paid off by how deliciously rewarding this song is in the here and now.
