I lived in Korea for a couple of months, and yes it is true that many things are expensive in the country, but many Korean people are obsessed with luxury. Koreans often complained about inflation, salaries, and house prices. Still, they spent a lot of their money on eating out in fancy, trendy places, buying expensive clothes, and keeping that lifestyle even if there were less costly options, no wonder they couldn't save money.

Since they're aware that they cannot afford a house. They'd rather spend savings on luxury items they. I don't think this behavior is hard to understand.

manonn2006 this doesn’t happen only in Korea. It also happens in Europe, not to mention the USA, where many people live paycheck to paycheck and max out their credit cards.

Put ourselves in their shoes. These young adults (Gen Z especially) know for sure they will never ever be able to buy a house although they save money for whole life. The property price is just too high & unreachable. Because of this reality, they believe it is useless to save money to buy a house. They spend their money for experiences such as travelling, fancy dinings, etc etc. This happens in South Korea, Japan & China.

This is true for many people who live in some countries in Europe.My friends go on atleast three holidays, buy unnecessary things , have hundreds pairs of shoes, forever buying clothing to throw out the next season , clubbing on weekends and eat out or oder food. I managed with my loan to build a house but I also haved not gone on holidays for ten years.

i don't understand something. They all complan about high rents, but nobody is willing to take a bank loan for 30 years like we in Europe do, buy a flat with it. This means no luxury spending but at least you have your own house and don't need to pay rent to others.

@NuclearChild_ Life in Europe is so boring for young people compared to life in Asia. There are so many entertaintment in Asia for young people, life is more exciting. Also....young people in Asia are more fashionable than young people in Europe. They spend a lot of money to be fashionable. You can come to South Korea, Japan or China, and you will see what I mean.

@brianmansan nobody can buy house or flat only by saving, that's mission impossible. That's why we take bank loans. It means a lot of sacrifice for 20, 30 years, but if you start earlier you will own your home earlier. 20 years pass very fast. People usually pay off loan with only two incomes (much smaller than average incomes in rich Korea) , without living with parents and splitting costs like Koreans do. I think that Koreans are basically parasiting on parents, living hedonistic irresponsible life.

@NuclearChild_ Every person has his/her own thinking & belief. This is not about right or wrong. Many foreigners often misunderstand Korea & its people. Many think Koreans are addicted to plastic surgery because they want to look beautiful & handsome, that is just one side of story. By having good appeaeance, it also boosts their chance to get employment. Unlike in Europe....competition in Asia, especially in East Asia, is extremely extremely tight. So if you don't stand out among the crowd....there is a small chance for you to get sexted. This is more like they NEED to have plastic surgery rather than they WANT to have one. And plastic surgery surely cost a lot of money. So they live in dilemma.

每個(gè)人都有自己的想法和信仰。這和對(duì)錯(cuò)沒(méi)有關(guān)系。很多外國(guó)人經(jīng)常會(huì)誤解韓國(guó)和韓國(guó)人。很多人覺(jué)得韓國(guó)人癡迷于整形手術(shù)是因?yàn)樗麄兿胍雌饋?lái)更加美麗更加英俊，但這只是故事的其中一面而已。良好的外形可以幫助他們?cè)黾泳蜆I(yè)的機(jī)會(huì)。和歐洲不同，亞洲尤其是東亞的競(jìng)爭(zhēng)極其激烈。所以如果你不能從人群中脫穎而出，那么你被選中的機(jī)會(huì)就會(huì)非常小。更加確切的說(shuō)法是他們需要做整形手術(shù)，而不是他們自己真的想要做這樣的手術(shù)。而且整形手術(shù)肯定會(huì)花很多錢(qián)。所以他們真的是進(jìn)退兩難。
