Los Angeles-based producer?Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith?is enamored by energy. With 2016’s?EARS, she captured the vibrancy of a “futurist jungle” by emulating the constant little changes of the natural world. On 2017’s?The Kid, she used the Buchla modular synth to create ambient works meditating on the cyclical nature of existence. “Expanding Electricity,” a track from her upcoming album,?The Mosaic of Transformation, concludes what Smith has called an “expression of love and appreciation for electricity.”
Smith first surrounds us with orchestral ornamentation, then quickly shifts to a looping modular synth. “I feel it, can you feel it expanding?” she sings, echoed vocals filling the air. The warmth and repetition of her mantra draw the ear to the precise variations in the music, where water droplets and micro-rhythms abound. Gradually, this kind of deep listening magnifies awareness of your surroundings—even of your own heartbeat. When she asks, “How can I help to serve you so you can do what you do?” she seems to speak from the viewpoint of energy itself, which provides without demand. “Expanding Electricity” is Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s exhortation to humans to recognize the intricacies that make our survival possible—and an exaltation of all that provides us with life.
