Shining Days
1893-1899

Though you are in your shining days,
Voices among the crowd
And new friends busy with your praise,
Be not unkind or proud,
But think about old friends the most:
Time’s bitter flood will rise.
Your beauty perish and be lost
For all eyes but these eyes.
W. B. Yeats, ‘The Lover Pleads with his Friend for Old Friends’ (first published July 1897)
1893
Only a few letters are available as early as 1893, including one from Yeats in January and a couple shortly after from Maud Gonne, in connection with the new Irish libraries' scheme in which they were involved with Count Plunkett, C. H. Oldham and others. Maud was not able to fulfil all the engagements made for her as she was ill in Paris in January, but in February she lectured in Loughrea and New Ross. Her first letter also indicates their common interest in mysticism and visions.

My dear ‘Scotia’1
I am trying to arrange the following set of lectures for you and am writing to all the places except Omagh which Plunkett undertakes and Cork for which a certain John O’Mahony2 will be responsible. The[re] will I think be no difficulty as we have been already applied to by all the places mentioned. At Cork between 20 & 27th of January, at Westport (Co Mayo) between 27th & 2nd Feb, at Castlerea (Roscommon) between 4th & 8th of Feb, Loughrea between 12th & 15th Feb. There is a meeting in Dublin on 17th February at which we hope you will speak & report progress. You will then go to New Ross & lecture between 20th Feb & Feb 25 & then go on to Listowel & [End of letter missing]
1.?? ‘Scotia’ was a name WBY used for MG in the early days of their friendship. See L (K), 341.
2.?? John O’Mahony (d. 1904), a journalist and later successful barrister, was a member of the National Literary Society and married Nora Tynan, sister of the poet Katharine Tynan, in 1895.
