A decade ago, the Walkmen were a collectionof self-pitying, unstable, emotionally messy young men: by 2010's Lisbon, theysounded like wryly contented older ones. That album glowed with health, happiness,relaxation, and "Heaven," the first single and title track from theirupcoming record, feels like a continuation of Lisbon's glow: the bass humspleasantly on two chords, the guitars give off the same postcard-ocean sparkle.But the drums have tightened a bit, from an amiable trot to a nervous thrum, ahint of caffeine buzzing in the song's veins. Then, you stop nodding your headto the chorus and hear it: "Remember, remember/ All we fight for." Ishe falling back in love with his old anxiety? Or something even deeper?"Don't leave me/ You're my best friend/ All of my life, you've alwaysbeen." Leithauser sings this lyric with the same audible shit-eating grinas always, and you realize: that good old desperation is creeping its way back in.
