WHEN AUTUMN CAME, Tim walked through the pale-yellow aisles of Trader Joe’s in Los Angeles, past coolers filled with pre-packaged burritos, organic tofu and large pieces of papaya. He found the pickled salmon and picked up a couple of packets of cream cheese.

Living like he had been, being awake all night, buried in thirteen projects at once, no longer only affected him. In fact, Tim barely knew his nephews. Even if it was hard to admit, he was not a good uncle. Racquel was right. He had to stop pretending that everything was fine, it must not be like this again.

He spoke with the guys at the office in Stockholm and they agreed in 2014 to focus only on the festivals that made the biggest impression and that Tim liked the most. Ultra in Miami, of course, Stereosonic in Australia, Tomorrowland in Belgium. Maybe Lollapalooza. Just over ninety gigs were booked for next year, it felt manageable. Tim declined to be on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show during the autumn; he declined even when Jesse Waits contacted him with a lucrative offer to play at his twin brother’s newly opened club in Miami.

That same autumn, singer Chris Martin was sitting at home at his piano. It was a special and somewhat tumultuous time for the Englishman, who had recently moved to Los Angeles with his wife Gwyneth Paltrow and their two children. Now the ten-year marriage was about to end.

On the other hand, it was for the same reason that they had become one of the world’s biggest groups. They were a distinct arena band, one that shone most brightly when the music became a collective experience.
