AFTER THROWING THE KEYS AT THE CLERK, I MARCHED OUT of the hotel as fast as I could. Tang clanked after me but struggled to keep up.

The cab drove through the fog and dropped us outside a large glass building in the shape of a skatepark, with two high sides sloping down to a trough in the middle. There was a paved area in front of it, and lovingly manicured miniature trees lined the path to the entrance like emergency gangway lights. Tang and I clanked and walked respectively up the symmetrical avenue, never seeming to get any closer until we were actually there. The cold fog that enveloped the building gave the impression it was up in the clouds.

The foyer inside was exactly as the exterior promised it would be, with similar potted trees dotted around and some hard-wearing leather sofas near the front desk. I found myself almost tiptoeing through the hushed space, but Tang’s feet made such a racket as the metal hit the marble that our arrival would never have gone unnoticed. I looked closely at Tang for any sign in his compact little body that he might recognize where he was.

The receptionist typed something into the shiny thin laptop in front of her, then she smiled. Then she typed again, finishing her input with a short bounce on the carriage-return key.

Cory kept us waiting for a long time. I fretted about Tang’s boredom levels and the glass walls around us. When Tang’s patience eventually cracked, he chose to bother the floor, not the windows. Seeing his muted reflection in the marble, he stooped down for a closer look and his feet slid away from under him.

Ten long minutes later, the piercing sound of a glass door turning on its hinges made us look to our right. A tall man was approaching; the kind of man who made me feel inadequate – broad shouldered and tanned, but not too arrange, with a designer shirt and fashionable shorts that shouldn’t have been suitable for the office but on him were absolutely appropriate. He seemed an unlikely candidate to be a robot hobbyist. He held out his hand to me, showing a smile of perfect teeth and peachy dimples on both cheeks.

He led us back through the door and down a sunny glass corridor that had been shielded from view from the foyer by clever use of prisms, or something. A short distance down the corridor, Cory suddenly turned left and walked through a wall. As I drew level, I saw him was holding open another glass door for me.

I have no idea where you’d get a part like that, or even how you’d fit the cylinder if you did get one. I guess you could get one made, but I don’t know who by or how long it’d take.’

I felt my shoulders drop, and I huffed out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding.

See here.’ He pointed to where Tang’s arm met his body. ‘This may look like just a tube, but the creator’s done this for a reason. I’m guessing he didn’t have everything he’d normally like to use at his disposal, so he used whatever he had. Using a tube like this means your robot’s got a good range of motion. If he’d used fixed pieces of metal an’ welded them together, he wouldn’t be able to do half the things he can. The robot’s body’s a fixed box, as you see, but the range of arm movement compensates for it. The legs, too. He knew what he was doing, whoever put him together. Your best bet would be to find the guy who made him.’

I’ve seen a lot of AI, and after a while you get to recognize types of work. It’s a case of experience. You know how you can often tell whether handwriting belongs to a man or a woman? Well, it’s the same sort of thing. I can’t put my finger on it, he just seems…man-made. Literally. He’s very masculine.’

You’ll find they can do a lot more. And they don’t come broken, obviously.’ He gave a hearty laugh and slapped me on the upper arm.
