Thoughtful first wife

周興和背著鋪蓋卷走出看守所大門。

Zhou Xinghe carried his bedrolls out of the detention house.

時(shí)值初秋，空氣好不清新，天空好不高遠(yuǎn)，陽光好不燦爛！他抬頭看了看久違了的藍(lán)天和白云，看了看遠(yuǎn)方的山巒和綠樹，眼前竟有些眩暈。當(dāng)他收回目光朝前望去，眼簾里映出一個(gè)熟悉的身影來。

It was the early autumn, the air was fresh, the sky was high, and the sun was brilliant! 那是一個(gè)戴眼鏡的中年女人。

這個(gè)女人，在周興和被收審期間，和周興和妻子王瓊?cè)A到這里來探望了他好多回，除了給他送些香皂、牙膏之類里面需要的東西，再有就是噓寒問暖，使深陷囹圄焦躁煩悶的周興和感到無比的安慰。有時(shí)，這個(gè)女人還和妻子王瓊?cè)A不約而同走到了一起，他們以姐妹相稱，都在為周興和的安危和前途擔(dān)心。甚至，在王瓊?cè)A天晚了或下雨回農(nóng)村不方便時(shí)，她還把她接到自己家居住。

During the period when Zhou Xinghe was put on trial, this woman, together with Zhou Xinghe’s wife Wang Qionghua, visited him here many times. In addition to bringing him some soaps and toothpaste which he needed, she also took care of him and gave him great comfort when he was in prison and anxious. Sometimes, this woman and his wife Wang Qionghua also happened to come together, they call each other as sister, and were worried about Zhou Xinghe's safety and future. Even when it was late or inconvenient for Wang Qionghua to return to the countryside when it rained, she took her to stay in her own home.

這個(gè)女人叫劉鳳瓊，是鹽亭縣城郊旅館的服務(wù)員。她得到周興和今天要出來的消息后，專門趕到這里來接他。

This woman, Liu Fengqiong, was a waitress at a hotel on the outskirts of Yanting County. Having received the news that Zhou Xinghe was coming out today, she came here specially to meet him.

這個(gè)人出現(xiàn)在周興和最困難的日子里，恐怕也是一種緣分吧！

This person appeared in Zhou Xinghe’s most difficult days, it might be a kind of fate!

在周興和進(jìn)看守所的前一年，也就是1987年6月的一天，他和運(yùn)輸木材的駕駛員來到城郊旅館住宿，認(rèn)識(shí)了剛到這里才工作兩三天的服務(wù)員劉鳳瓊。這個(gè)服務(wù)員，和其他服務(wù)人員一樣平淡無華，剛開始并沒有給周興和留下特別的印象。當(dāng)天晚上，他和喝得醉醺醺的駕駛員回到旅館，敲開了值班室的房門。

One day in June 1987, a year before Zhou Xinghe entered the detention house, he and the driver, who was transporting the timber, went to a hotel on the outskirts of the city and met Liu Fengqiong, a waitress who had only worked there for two or three days. The waitress, as bland as the rest of the staff, didn't make a particular impression on Zhou Xinghe at first. That night he returned to the hotel with the drunk driver and knocked on the door of the duty room.

半夜時(shí)分，一股煙霧從旅店的走廊里躥了出來，引起了正在值班尚未休息的劉鳳瓊注意。她循著煙味找去，發(fā)現(xiàn)這煙霧是從周興和他們住的房間里傳出來的。她急急打開房門，看見喝醉的駕駛員床鋪已被一個(gè)煙頭點(diǎn)燃。情急之中，她打來一盆水噗地將火煙潑滅。繼而，她大聲的叫嚷把周興和兩人吵醒。周興和醒來一看，也吃了一驚，面對惱怒的服務(wù)員，他連忙賠不是。

In the middle of the night, a cloud of smoke came out of the corridor of the hotel, attracting the attention of Liu Fengqiong, who was still on duty. She followed the smell of smoke and saw that it was coming from Zhou Xinghe’s room. She hastily opened the door and saw that the drunken driver's bed had been set alight by a cigarette end. In the emergency, she poured a basin of water and put out the fire and smoke. Then, she shouted loudly to wake Zhou Xinghe and the driver. When Zhou Xinghe woke up, he was surprised too. Facing the angry waitress, he quickly apologized.

劉鳳瓊沒給他們多說，被子鋪單燒壞了，叫他們第二天自己去給旅館領(lǐng)導(dǎo)解釋清楚。

Liu Fengqiong did not speak to them more, just said that the quilt and sheet were burned, and asked them to go to explain to the hotel leadership in the next day.

就是這次未遂的火災(zāi)，讓周興和與劉鳳瓊相識(shí)。一來二往，他們逐漸熟識(shí)起來。周興和了解到，劉鳳瓊因丈夫早年去世，就她一個(gè)人拖著5歲的女兒相依為命，她艱難的處境讓周興和產(chǎn)生了同情；劉鳳瓊也了解到，周興和家在農(nóng)村，家里有一個(gè)由父母做主從小娶來的媳婦，還有4個(gè)孩子，生活也是很艱難的。劉鳳瓊欽佩周興和的聰明能干，敬佩他為人耿直仁義；周興和也覺得劉鳳瓊善解人意、賢淑重情，久而久之，兩人逐漸引以為友。

It was the failed fire that brought Zhou Xinghe and Liu Fengqiong familiar with together. As they came and went, they got to know each other. Zhou Xinghe learned that Liu Fengqiong’s husband died at an early age, leaving her alone with her 5-year-old daughter. Zhou Xinghe felt sympathy for her difficult situation. Liu Fengqiong also learned that Zhou's family was in the countryside, with a wife whom had married as a child and four children, and that life was difficult too. Liu Fengqiong looked up to Zhou Xinghe's cleverness and ability, and admired his honesty and integrity; Zhou Xinghe also felt that Liu Fengqiong was considerate, virtuous and affectionate; as time passed by, two people were attracted to be friends gradually.

周興和一個(gè)人長年在外奔波，在生活上只能是自己照顧自己；劉鳳瓊作為一個(gè)帶孩子單身女人，生活中也有許多不便之處。閑暇之時(shí)，兩人有時(shí)在一起交流思想，談?wù)勑睦锏臒篮涂鄲?，相互間也給予一些力所能及的幫助。由于思想比較接近，性情比較相投，久而久之，難免日久生情。特別是周興和被關(guān)起來之后，劉鳳瓊常去看守所探望他，給了周興和許多安慰，這讓他從心底里感到溫暖。周興和慢慢讀懂了劉鳳瓊的心思，一種朦朦朧朧的想法也從他內(nèi)心滋長起來。

Zhou Xinghe always rushed about for a long time in the outside, could only take care of himself in life; as a single woman with child, Liu Fengqiong's life also had many inconveniences. In their spare time, they sometimes exchanged ideas, talked about their troubles and frustrations, and gave each other some help within their power. Because their thoughts were close and the temper was congenial, as time passed by, it was hard to avoid a growing love. Especially after Zhou Xinghe was imprisoned, Liu Fengqiong often visited him in the detention house, which gave Zhou Xinghe a lot of comforts, which made him feel warm from the bottom of his heart. Zhou Xinghe slowly understood the heart of Liu Fengqiong, and a hazy idea also grew from his heart.

但，盡管周興和與王瓊?cè)A婚前沒有什么感情基礎(chǔ)，隨著時(shí)間的推移，兩人之間觀念、情趣、習(xí)慣等的差距也越來越大，可每當(dāng)想到妻子這些年來和自己一起受苦受難、共同養(yǎng)兒育女的過程，周興和心里就矛盾到了極點(diǎn)——怎么向妻子開得了口呀！

However, although Zhou Xinghe and Wang Qionghua premaritally had no emotional foundation, with the passage of time, they found the gap in their thought, interest and habit between two people became bigger and bigger, but whenever he thought of his wife with their suffering together and common child-rearing process over the years, Zhou Xinghe was contradictory to the extreme - how could he say out to his wife?

劉鳳瓊的一番話，讓周興和一夜沒合眼。

Liu Fengqiong's words kept Zhou Xinghe awake all night.

天剛亮，周興和懷著十分復(fù)雜的心情，急匆匆就往農(nóng)村家里奔去?；氐郊遥依闲∫娪畜@無險(xiǎn)歸來的他，一片歡聲，妻子拿出了家里平時(shí)舍不得吃的好東西，來為他接風(fēng)。

At dawn, Zhou Xinghe hurried to his home in the countryside with mixed feelings. Back home, the whole family saw his safe return, and all were very happy; his wife took out the good things that they were usually reluctant to eat, to give a reception in honor of him.

天黑了，孩子們睡下后，周興和與妻子有一場嚴(yán)肅認(rèn)真的談話。

After it was dark and the children had gone to bed, Zhou Xinghe had a serious talk with his wife.

當(dāng)周興和把自己與劉鳳瓊認(rèn)識(shí)的過程，以及這次回來的有些想法如實(shí)告訴妻子后，他忐忑不安地等待妻子的反應(yīng)。此時(shí)，四周靜極了，只有煤油燈如豆的火苗，在山風(fēng)里輕輕搖曳。王瓊?cè)A聽完周興和的敘述后，她沒有委屈怨恨，更沒有哭天抹淚，而是久久沒有吱聲——這么多年苦難與艱辛的磋磨，她的心已經(jīng)磨得很粗糙，遇事不驚了。

When Zhou Xinghe told his wife about the process of getting to know Liu Fengqiong and some of his thoughts, he waited anxiously for her reaction. At this time, the surrounding was very quiet, only the kerosene lamp’s flame was small as a bean, gently swaying in the mountain wind. After hearing Zhou Xinghe's story, Wang Qionghua did not complain or cry. Instead, she remained silent for a long time. After so many years of suffering on hardships, her heart was already worn rough and she was not surprised when anything happened.

正當(dāng)周興和心里七上八下不能平靜時(shí)，王瓊?cè)A說話了：“興和，我想了一下，我們不能讓一家人都在這個(gè)地方困死，為了你和孩子將來的前途，我們干脆把婚離了吧！這樣，你和孩子的戶口，就可以更方便地遷到鹽亭城里去了。在農(nóng)村生活太苦、太艱難了，現(xiàn)在能弄到一個(gè)農(nóng)轉(zhuǎn)非指標(biāo)多不容易哪！……”

“唉——”周興和這聲嘆息，不知是松了一口氣，還是嘆了一口氣，連他自己也說不清楚。連一向自詡硬漢的他，聽了妻子的話，眼睛里也禁不住潮濕起來。

"Alas!" Zhou Xinghe sighed, not knowing whether it was a relaxation or a groan. Even as tough as he always was, after listening to his wife's words, his eyes can not help wetting up.

“那……你怎么辦呢？”

“你放心，我個(gè)人倒沒什么。以后能嫁人就嫁人，沒有合適的，年紀(jì)大了我就帶外孫就是了?！蓖醐?cè)A接著平靜說道，“兩個(gè)姑娘也大了，到時(shí)候我給她們找個(gè)人戶，把她們嫁出去就是了?！?/p>

“王瓊?cè)A，沒想到天底下還有你這么寬容大度，這么深明大義的女人！”周興和再聽了妻子這番話，禁不住眼淚差點(diǎn)流了出來。停了停，他一字一句對王瓊?cè)A說道，“我發(fā)誓，我周興和如果將來事業(yè)有成，我絕不會(huì)忘記你，一定會(huì)報(bào)答你！”

"Wang Qionghua, I didn't expect there is still such a generous and enlightened woman like you in the world!" Hearing his wife's words, Zhou Xinghe could not help crying. After a pause, he said to Wang Qionghua word by word, "I swear that if I succeed in my career in the future, I will never forget you and will definitely repay you!"

1999年9月，周興和踐行了自己的諾言，專門為王瓊?cè)A在成都買了商品房，把她和她再婚的丈夫一起接到了成都定居，讓他們離開了貧窮的山區(qū)。他們在成都的生活費(fèi)、水電費(fèi)、物管費(fèi)、醫(yī)療費(fèi)等全部由周興和承擔(dān)。周興和并承諾，負(fù)擔(dān)到他們百年以后——當(dāng)然，這些都是后話了。

In September of 1999, Zhou Xinghe made good on his promise to buy Wang Qionghua a commercial apartment in Chengdu, and bring her and her remarried husband to settle in the city and get them out of the poor mountains. Their living expenses, utilities, property management fees and medical expenses in Chengdu were all borne by Zhou Xinghe. Zhou Xinghe promised to take care of them until they die - but that, of course, is a later story.
