The gentian flower takes its name from Gentius, the King of Illyria. According to legend, Hungary was suffering the ravages of a long, devastating plague. In desperation, the king shot an arrow into the air hoping it would guide him to a cure for his ailing subjects. The arrow landed in the heart of the gentian plant, which did indeed provide a cure for the plague. Today, the gentian plant, which grows in alpine mountain areas, is still valued for its medicinal properties as well as its attractiveness. It takes several years for the plants to reach maturity, thus the small but sturdy flower is associated with the extended process of healing.
