Chapter1
?
“Did you live?” Merrin’s voice crackled to life over Cal’s comms. Her accent and often wry way of speaking made the question come off glib, like she didn’t really care about the answer one way or another.
“Did you hear something, Beedee?” Cal asked his droid rhetorically, knowing Merrin well enough to know that the sound of his voice over comms would be enough of an answer to satisfy Merrin’s sarcastic but still genuine query. “Sounded almost like…someone who was worried about us?” he added in a sing-songy voice.
“Must have been your imagination,” Merrin responded contemplatively. There was a beat of silence as though she were deep in thought. “Yes, next time we’re hard up for credits we’ll just drop you in a cantina. You’ll survive.”

A Brood member they’d run into earlier that month—the one whose boots Cal was currently wearing—had divulged both the location of this base and the way that it functioned. It had been so kind of him to open up like that. And all it had taken was Merrin being particularly convincing with her equally scary and impressive space-witch magick for a moment or two.
He and Merrin made a damn good team.
?
“Look who finally decided to show up,” Cal teased as the hydraulics wheezed, lowering the ship’s ramp.
“This was the plan all along.” Merrin stepped off the Mantis first, her deep voice in its unique accent turning the was into vuz. Cal stared with just a little bit of envy as Merrin descended the ramp; somehow she managed to look daunting and intimidating everywhere she went, whether she intended to or not. A Dathomirian, Merrin had skin so pale it was like chalk; it reflected the light from the shield above, the gray markings on her face sprawled out like a spider. She kept her long, equally white hair tucked back into a severe bun—except the one piece around her face that always seemed to escape, no matter how hard she tried to keep it in place. Cal had seen her touch it a million times. And even years after leaving Dathomir, she still wore the black and red her people loved so much (though far less in the traditional Nightsister style—she’d really been finding what clothing worked for her in the field and out of it), but Cal could swear he saw a tint of green in it all—the color of her Nightsister magick.
Which Cal definitely understood and wasn’t at all unnerved by.
“Joke, Merrin,” clarified Cere as she followed the younger woman off the Mantis.“He was making a joke.”
…
“It wasn’t funny,” Merrin responded. Cal was pretty sure that was her own idea of a joke.
At least, he hoped so.

Chapter2
?
And of course Cal, the Jedi, a fellow survivor who made an alliance with a Nightsister. Together they were the light and the dark. Cal was the star that illuminated Merrin’s shadow. His earnest face, pale for a human, dusted with darker spots. Scars crossing his nose and eyebrow that spoke of a hard life. Hair like burnished copper, always pushed up and back out of his green eyes in a way that seemed to defy gravity. His smiles came quick and easy, like his connection to the Force.
Must be nice.
Over the last few years, Merrin saw something different in Cal almost every time she looked at him. Sometimes he was the hardened warrior leader of their crew, bent on vengeance. Othertimes, though he tried his best to hide it, Cal was the scared and lonely Jedi on the run. He was dedicated, but equally dedicated to his cause and to his crew. He was so sweet.
It was kind of annoying.
?
Cal breathed heavily into his comms. Merrin imagined him running sideways across a vertical surface, leaping for the next one, making it. “Wish you could teach me how to do that,” he said in a tone Merrin recognized as only half joking.
“All your fire would come from your hair,” Merrin answered as she waited for Cere to shut down one of the vents. “You would disappear from the top down, just consumed by—”
