This year’s new iPhones might not have as much in the box as you’re used to. According to well-connected analyst Ming-chi Kuo, Apple is planning to stop including a power adapter and EarPods in the box with 2020 models, and will even remove the power adapter from the new iPhone SE’s packaging later this year. Kuo’s research note was reported on by AppleInsider, MacRumors, and 9to5Mac.

Apple is attempting to offset the cost increases that come with upgrading the iPhone range to 5G, according to Kuo. Smaller packaging would be more eco-friendly and also reduce shipping costs, since more phones could fit into a single shipment. (Encouraging more sales of AirPods can’t hurt, either.)

Right now Apple includes EarPods with all iPhones, a 5W USB-A adapter with the 11 and SE, and an 18W USB-C adapter with the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. Last year’s inclusion of the 18W charger came after years of widespread complaints regarding the slow 5W adapter, so it would be surprising to see it disappear so quickly. It’s not clear, however, whether that will be the case across the whole iPhone line.

Separately, Apple is said to be developing a new 20W fast charger that will come alongside new iPad models. Kuo believes a 10.8-inch iPad is coming at some point this year, with an 8.5-inch iPad mini set for the first half of 2021. These iPads will apparently come with the new 20W charger, which will otherwise be available as a separate purchase for iPhone owners.

The phrase ‘if they include the charger, you’d have no choice but pay for it’ makes it sound like somehow we are going to see a price cut equal to what it would cost to get a power supply. We all know that isn’t how it works. Instead what happens is they will continue to charge you whatever they think you will pay, and their profit margins will be higher.

Why would you expect a price cut?! Makes no sense. You are getting a phone with newer tech. You could expect a price cut if they sold you the exact same phone but without the charger. But the new phone is a different phone.
You have TWO of many variables affecting the price here — X the phone and Y the charger. Both variables change and are independent from each other.

While yes they’re probably cheap to manufacture, including it with the phone increases the box size and therefore increases shipping costs by probably a good deal. Smaller boxes mean more phones can be shipped at a time thus reducing costs.

People don’t understand economies of scale. They just want to complain that the phone they already have headphones & a shit ton of chargers for, won’t include one. They’re gonna be super mad once the whole industry follows in suit, as they usually do, and only the budget brands pack in "the essentials." It’s a very smart way to reduce a shit ton of waste & save a ton of money. People will get over it.

Honestly, this is probably for the best. Especially the loss of the EarPods. That’s really a waste to ship around the world only to end up in the drawers of most and eventually in the trash. The charger too. Most have a good number floating around at this point and, if not, they are readily available. No mention of the charging cable in the article. Considering how easily they wear out, hopefully they’ll still be providing a new one with a new phone purchase.

If it’s actually about being environmentally friendly (which I can totally get behind), they should pass on the savings from omitting them to the consumer. Or simply unbundle them, and allow buyers to get a free charger with the purchase of an iPhone, if they want it.
As it stands now, Apple gets to pocket a few hundred million extra dollars in profit.

The article says they’re also doing this to defray the extra cost of 5G. Not sure I really buy it but there is at least some truth to it. Any innovation is going to cost more. You can argue that year to year improvements are expected, though. It’s still a net positive for the environment, so I approve.

I’m confused as to why the whole USB-C thing is even a talking point with iPhones.
There has never been any indication that Apple is even considering switching from Lightning to USB-C. It’s not like USB-C is so new that Apple is waiting to jump on-board. They themselves made USB-C the (only) port of choice on their MacBooks years ago, and even made the switch on the iPad Pro in 2018. If they wanted it on the iPhone, they would done it by now.
It’s not happening.

I’m actually alright with this. I’m willing to assume 99.999% of this site’s readership already has a USB-A power brick (something that basically never wears out), and I have countless unused EarPods from my iPhones. EarPods and 5W power bricks are basically e-waste at this point.

Completely agree with this, how many earpods remain in the box and just get thrown away? I know for sure I don’t need another lightning cable. Nintendo has been doing this for years in japan, if not what, decades? Its not really that crazy of an idea. Maybe just drop the price of the standard cables/plugs for the apple new comers that might feel cheated.

I just keep the new charger and the earbuds in the box. After a year or two, when it’s time to upgrade, I add them to the Swappa listing to increase the resale value of the device. It always helps, and I never need a new charger when I already have about 15-20 of them sitting in my cable drawer.

Most "regular" people I see around me, aka not tech enthusiast, use their default headphones that came in the box. Earpods are still very popular in my country because they’re more convenient to use without a dongle, and not everybody wants to upgrade to AirPods.
Let’s also not forget that most people are cheap when it comes to buying accessories like chargers or cables. I don’t think it’s a good idea to stop including chargers, so that the average Joe plugs his brand new iphone 12 pro max to a 5$ charger. Because let’s be honest, official Apple accessories are too expensive for the average buyer.
And when people upgrade their iphone, they usually sell their previous model, with their old charger. So I don’t think it’s that obvious that people have multiple quality chargers lying around at home.

I don’t think the cost of the accessories is the problem, to be honest. If you’re spending $1,000 on an iPhone, you can surely afford the $30 or whatever the headset costs. To me, it’s more the annoyance of buying the headset separately. We’ve come to expect, over many years, that headsets are included in the box. And, of course, not everyone has a Lightning headset lying around.
For instance, I’m an Android user, so I definitely don’t have any Lightning accessories. But I have a work-issued iPhone 8. If it hadn’t come with EarPods, that would leave me a choice between either not having headphones to use with it, or spend money on buying EarPods (or a dongle) which I wouldn’t want to do since it’s not even my phone.
And when people upgrade their iphone, they usually sell their previous model, with their old charger. So I don’t think it’s that obvious that people have multiple quality chargers lying around at home.
Exactly. I’m seeing a lot of comments here about people saying they have loads of adapters lying around. I don’t understand why. I’ve owned several phones over the years, but I don’t have multiple extra chargers, because I obviously give those along when I sell my old phone. Are people here giving away their old phones without the brick and just hoarding on chargers?

Okay… So basically there are people who are actively contributing to the e-waste problem by hoarding on chargers and cables that they don’t need, at least some of which will inevitably have to be disposed, as opposed to selling it along with the phone (which reduces your own waste and also means the buyer doesn’t have to buy another charger and potentially create more waste and add to the problem). And then those same people (or some of them, at least) are now patting Apple on the back by saying that excluding chargers is a fantastic move for the environment.

Okay. Sure. I mean, wouldn’t the buyer already have their own chargers? The point is that there are billions of USB charges out there, most of which are likely compatible with charging phones and which have a much longer life cycle than phones. So it makes sense to hold onto them rather than send them on to someone who already has their own. Also, we happen to use all those chargers in the house. We’ve got 3 phones, 4 tablets, wireless headphones, battery powered speakers and other gadgets that use them. Holding onto a few chargers from my past phones has permitted me to have enough of them around so we can (usually) find one when it’s needed. The key is not throwing them out or shipping them off when you still need them. Otherwise it’s me definitely buying a new one instead of the other guy potentially buying one.
