#Netflix released a historical documentary series today called "#QueenCleopatra," which consists of four episodes. I just finished watching it. When I was younger, I watched the long movie version starring Elizabeth Taylor, but this time it features a Black actress, Adele James, playing the role of Cleopatra.
?
The series has already faced some protests in Egypt, expressing dissatisfaction with the portrayal of Cleopatra as a Black woman, and accusing Netflix of distorting history and disrespecting the last pharaoh of Egypt. However, the series actually begins by suggesting that a Black Cleopatra may be more historically accurate.
?
Overall, it's a great documentary series, and the actors all did a fantastic job. It made me wonder if Cleopatra would have been able to get through her reign in Egypt without meeting Mark Antony. But fate has its own reasons, and it's hard for us to understand.
?
Cleopatra was also adept at using her charm, but it wasn't just her beauty. She was proficient in multiple languages, literature, astronomy, and philosophy, and she traveled to various countries. In addition, the nobles and pharaohs in Egypt had a consciousness of gender equality. So in the male-dominated Rome, her existence was unique and outstanding, which is why she was able to attract Caesar and Mark Antony. I believe she loved these two men, but she loved her kingdom of Egypt even more. Therefore, she formed an alliance with Rome using these relationships, and Egypt under her leadership became rich and peaceful.
?
Her last wish to be buried with Mark Antony was very touching.
?
Cleopatra loved her children very much, but I wonder if she would have been able to make changes and reforms to end the practice of close kin marriage and the conflicts between siblings if she had peacefully handed over the throne to her three children. I believe she must have thought about it, but she didn't have the opportunity to see it happen.
