一顆沙里看出一個世界,一朵野花里一座天堂,
To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,

Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.

籠子里關(guān)著一只知更鳥,會引起天上神靈的怒惱。
A robin redbreast in a cage
Puts all heaven in a rage.
鴿舍里擠滿著快樂的鴿群,會使全地獄震蕩不寧。
A dove-house fill'd with doves and pigeons
Shudders hell thro' all its regions.
一只狗餓死在主人的門前,預(yù)示著整個國家的衰亂。
A dog starv'd at his master's gate
Predicts the ruin of the state.
一匹馬在路上受了虐待,呼吁上蒼要人的血還債。
A horse misused upon the road
Calls to heaven for human blood.

被追逐的野兔每一聲慘叫,會把胸神經(jīng)撕下一條。
Each outcry of the hunted hare
A fibre from the brain does tear.
一只百靈鳥傷了翅膀,小天使為著牠停止歌唱。
A skylark wounded in the wing
A cherubim does cease to sing.
帶鐵巨的斗雞準備廝殺,使上升的太陽感到害怕。
The game-cock clipt and arm'd for fight
Does the rising sun affright.
豺狼和獅子每大吼一聲,喚起了地獄里一個魂靈。
Every wolf's and lion's howl
Raises from hell a human soul.

野鹿自在地到處遨游,使人的靈魂也無掛無憂。
The wild deer, wand'ring here and there
Keeps the human soul from care.
小羊被殘害是騷亂的預(yù)兆,雖然它原諒宰殺牠的屠刀。
The lamb misus'd breeds public strife
And yet forgives the butcher's knife.
蝙蝠傍晚時飛去飛來,牠已離開無信仰的腦袋。
The bat that flits at close of eve
Has left the brain that won't believe.
向黑夜祈求保佑的鴟梟,表示無信仰的人的驚憂。
The owl that calls upon the night
Speaks the unbeliever's fright.
誰要傷害小小的鷦鷯,人們永不會和他友好。
He who shall hurt the little wren
Shall never be belov'd by men.
誰要把一條牛激怒起來,永不會得到女人的垂愛。
He who the ox to wrath has mov'd
Shall never be by woman lov'd.
?淘氣的孩子把蒼蠅弄死,會感到蜘蛛對他的仇視。
The wanton boy that kills the fly
Shall feel the spider's enmity.
誰要折磨金龜子的小生命,在無盡的黑夜里空造園亭。
He who torments the chafer's sprite
Weaves a bower in endless night.
葉子上的毛蟲只給你重演你的母親曾受過的苦難。
The caterpillar on the leaf
Repeats to thee thy mother's grief.
不要殺害飛蛾和蝴蝶,最后的審判近在眉睫。
Kill not the moth nor butterfly
For the last judgement draweth nigh.

He who shall train the horse to war
Shall never pass the polar bar.
寡婦的貓和乞丐的狗,喂養(yǎng)牠們你也會長肉。
The beggar's dog and widow's cat
Feed them and thou wilt grow fat.
蚊蟲唱著夏天的歌曲,從誹謗者的舌頭得來毒液。
The gnat that sings his summer's song
Poison gets from slander's tongue.
蛇虺和蠑螈口里的毒涎是懷著妒心的人的腳汗。
The poison of the snake and newt
Is the sweat of envy's foot.
采蜜的蜂兒尾上的毒刺正像藝術(shù)家所懷的情忌。
The poison of the honey bee
Is the artist's jealousy.
王子的華服和乞丐的破衣同是守財奴門袋上的菌子。
The prince's robes and beggar's rags
Are toadstools on the miser's bags.
說真話倘若是存心不良為害性超過了彌天大謊。
A truth that's told with bad intent
Beats all the lies you can invent.
這樣的安排顯然很不錯, 因為人天生能苦又能樂;
It is right it should be so
Man was made for joy and woe;
這道理如果我們能了然,我們到哪兒都會很平安。
And when this we rightly know
Thro' the world we safely go.
樂與憂精密地交織在一起,恰巧做神經(jīng)的靈魂的外衣;
Joy and woe are woven fine
A clothing for the soul divine.
每一種痛苦、每一次焦愁全都貫穿著快樂的絲縷。
Under every grief and pine
Runs a joy with silken twine.
不要把襁褓當保了嬰孩,凡是人類生存的所在,
The babe is more than swaddling bands
Throughout all these Human Lands.
工具是死的、手卻是活的, 這道理每個農(nóng)夫都明白。
Tools were made,? born were hands
Every farmer understands.
我們眼睛里每一顆淚珠在永恒里變來一個孩子;
Every tear from every eye
Becomes a babe in eternity;
它被聰明的女性捉住,歡天喜地被送了回去。
This is caught by females bright
And return'd to its own delight.

牛鳴、羊叫,獅吼、狼嗥都是沖擊著天岸的波濤。
The bleat, the bark, bellow, and roar
Are waves that beat on heaven's shore.
在杖下哀哀啼哭的嬰兒死了后仍要報復(fù)這責打。
The babe that weeps the rod beneath
Writes revenge in realms of death.
乞丐的破衣在風中翻卷,把蒼天也同樣撕成碎片。
The beggar's rags, fluttering in air
Does to rags the heavens tear.
兵丁威武地帶著刀槍,使夏天的太陽慘淡無光。
The soldier, arm'd with sword and gun
Palsied strikes the summer's sun.
非洲海岸上所有的黃金,價值抵不到窮人的一文。
The poor man's farthing is worth more
Than all the gold on Afric's shore.
從勞動者手里得來的一文錢,可以買賣守財奴的田園;
One mite wrung from the lab'rer's hands
Shall buy and sell the miser's lands;
如果得到上蒼的保護,并可以買賣整個的國土。
Or, if protected from on high
Does that whole nation sell and buy.

誰要嘲笑兒童的信仰,老死時也落得被嘲笑的收場。
He who mocks the infant's faith
Shall be mock'd in age and death.
誰要使兒童喪失信心,會永在腐臭的墳?zāi)钩翜S。
He who shall teach the child to doubt
The rotting grave shall ne'er get out.
誰要尊重兒童的信仰,會征服地獄并戰(zhàn)勝死亡。
He who respects the infant's faith
Triumphs over hell and death.
兒童的天真與老人的理智是兩個季節(jié)所結(jié)的果實。
The child's toys and the old man's reasons
Are the fruits of the two seasons.
坐著問話的人不管多奸狡,怎樣回答他永遠不知道。
The questioner, who sits so sly
Shall never know how to reply.
誰要答復(fù)懷疑者的發(fā)問:就是熄滅了知識的明燈。
He who replies to words of doubt
Doth put the light of knowledge out.
古今來最猛烈毒藥的來源是愷撒大將頭上的桂冠。
The strongest poison ever known
Came from Caesar's laurel crown.
沒有東西比鐵甲和鋼盔更能使人類變成丑鬼。
Nought can deform the human race
Like to the armour's iron brace.
到耕犁上都鑲著金玉的時候,嫉妒者會向和平的技藝低頭。
When gold and gems adorn the plow
To peaceful arts shall envy bow.
一個謎語或唧唧蟲鳴是對懷疑者最好的答應(yīng)。
A riddle, or the cricket's cry
Is to doubt a fit reply.
螞蟻爬一寸、老鷹飛一里使蹩腳的哲學(xué)家微笑不已。
The emmet's inch and eagle's mile
Make lame philosophy to smile.
誰要懷疑他目睹的事情,無論怎樣永不會有信心。
He who doubts from what he sees
Will ne'er believe, do what you please.
太陽和月亮如果也懷疑,它們會立刻熱盡光熄。
If the sun and moon should doubt
They'd immediately go out.
偶爾發(fā)脾氣也許有好處,但不要心里常懷著憤怒。
To be in a passion you good may do
But no good if a passion is in you.
娼妓和賭徒經(jīng)政府批準,他們卻決定國家的命運。
The whore and gambler, by the state
Licensed, build that nation's fate.
條條街道上有叫號的娼妓,為古老的英國織著尸衣。
The harlot's cry from street to street
Shall weave old England's winding-sheet.

The winner's shout, the loser's curse
Dance before dead England's hearse.

Every night and every morn
Some to misery are born,

我們很容易相信謊話,如果不用眼睛去觀察;
We are led to believe a lie
When we see not thro' the eye,
謊話在一夜里自生自滅,當靈魂在一片光明里安歇。
Which was born in a night to perish in a night
When the soul slept in beams of light.
對于生活在黑夜的可憐人,上帝現(xiàn)身為燦爛的光明;
God appears, and God is light
To those poor souls who dwell in night;
但對于生活在白天的人,上帝顯現(xiàn)著人的身形。
But does a human form display
To those who dwell in realms of day.
