Dua Lipa?doesn’t care on “Don’t Start Now.” She doesn’t care about you, the bad ex-boyfriend who, now, suddenly, seems to care because she’s “so moved on it’s scary.” And she’s dancing with someone else, or at least she could if she wanted. And her voice sounds stronger than ever, inching closer and closer toward a natural deployment of melisma, not dramatically Aguilerian but more robust than that of the young singer who relied, however effectively, on vocal modulation to launch “New Rules” and its chorus into the anthemic stratosphere. And because “Don’t Start Now” is carefree and about being carefree, it starts in the middle of things, buoyant and effervescent, of course, because she’s not going back to the old ways, they’re not worth mentioning in detail, frankly, and she’s not going back to “the guy who tried to hurt [her] with the word goodbye,” she’s better now. The backdrop of “Don’t Start Now” is something like French bloghouse, which suits Dua Lipa, who’s somewhat of an expert on leaving shitty men, author of the covenant, as her low-ish register glides across Ian Kirkpatrick’s synths and electro-violin stabs and a wad of hollow, cowbell-like percussion that drops in a few times. It’s a romp, a dance party, whatever you like, whatever you do when you’re free from a nagging past.
