[Pov Miranda]
As the bell rang, excitement ran through the classroom. Students shuffled out onto the playground, shoving and talking loudly.
Miranda made her way through the crowd, and to the side of her English teacher Echo.
‘Please. I need a partner. A partner. Please.’ She glanced up at Echo and pleaded.?
Echo was sitting by the table beside the blackboard, correcting homework papers. She shrugged and put down her red pen. ‘Didn’t I already found you, like, three students who are good at English? And Kiku, doesn’t she know anyone?’
‘The ones you found are all busy okay??? Come on. I don’t get it… Why are there no debaters here? When we decided to participate in this tournament, we wanted to find a third member with very good skills. Now? As long as it’s a person, anyone is okay.’ Miranda wanted to weep.
‘A good person? Hmm, I do know one more.’ Echo stifled a smile and answered.
‘Who’s that?’
‘He’s from Class 2 Grade 10, and his name is Brandon. But…’
‘Great. Ten minutes left of recess, grade 10 is on the third floor, but it’s okay I’ll—— run!!!’
‘What the???’
Echo stared unbelievably at the figure of Miranda running down the hallway. It disappeared in a few seconds.
‘That child… She doesn’t know anything about it. But she’s good at socializing.’ She murmured to herself. ‘If Brandon can be friends with Kiku and with her…’
A smile tugged at her lips.
----------
‘Guys!’
Miranda knocked on the door of the classroom and called.
‘Hi, can I maybe talk to Brandon?’
‘Oh him? That freak?’ A girl standing by the wall scoffed. Her hair was clipped up loosely by a claw clip. ‘What’s up?’
‘Uh, I’m just asking, why do you call him a freak?’
‘Alice, she’s probably from middle school.’ Another girl walked up and stared at Miranda. ‘Let’s not spread negative energy to her or whatever.’ She made quote marks in the air with her fingers.
‘Ugh. Sure…That’s Brandon, if you’re looking for him.’ Alice pointed to the corner and a boy stood up quietly. He was tall and slim, and something shone on his hair. Miranda couldn’t help but gasp as she saw it was a feather-shaped hair clip.
‘Maybe we should find a quiet place to talk.’ She quickly motioned out the door. The gaze of the two fashionable girls were making her uncomfortable.
Brandon nodded and followed her outside. He had dark hair that was longer than average, and didn’t look very tough. He wore a pair of thin-framed glasses. Miranda noticed he kept his eyes away from the two girls’ all the time.
‘Do you want to be my debate partner?’ As soon as they walked outside, Miranda asked hopefully. ‘Please accept this…’
‘Wait, what? …Is it a competition?’
‘Yes. So it’s JWSD, three people on each team. We are missing one speaker. My English teacher is Echo, and she introduced you to me. You want to participate?’
‘Okay.’ Brandon blinked and replied flatly. ‘Then… what time is that? How does WSDC actually work? Do we have speaker positions or a coach? Who’s the other speaker?’?
‘Wait wait wait! Too much questions! So, the other debater is named Kiku, and she’s from the seventh grade okay? We hope to find a coach but haven’t yet. My plan was for us to meet her by the playground and talk there.’?
‘Now?’ He looked down and answered. ‘Fine.’
----------
As they approached the front door of the school building, Miranda spotted a figure waving at them on the bleachers.?
‘She’s there.’ Miranda pointed towards the place. ‘Race you there?’
‘Whatever.’ Brandon sighed and followed unwillingly.
Miranda thought he didn’t look very comfortable. But there’s nothing wrong with being a little shy right?
----------
‘So you’re Brandon?’ Kiku smiled and stretched out her hand. ‘Nice to meet you.’
Brandon nodded and accepted the handshake. Still, there was almost no emotion on his face.
‘Okay, let’s look at this… It’s the handbook of the tournament, and it has everything about it.’ Kiku opened a folder and the other two gathered around her.
‘I’ll explain the rules. I don’t know if you have experience in Asian Parliamentary debate, but this is very similar. The first speakers have 8 minutes of constructive speech, the second ones have 8 minutes of rebuttal, and the third speakers have 8 minutes of summary. Lastly, the first or second speaker will do a reply speech. There are POIs in JWSD; except for the first and last minute, you can stand up and ask a question to your opponent in a speech. You can’t do that in the reply of course. The biggest difference between these two is, JWSD has four resolutions that are announced a month before the tournament. These resolutions are used in the preliminary rounds, and the eliminating rounds have impromptu topics. Is that clear?’
‘Yes.’
‘I hope we’re not bothering you too much.’ Miranda turned to glance at him, saying.
‘No…you seem very nice.’ He answered with a light but genuine smile.
Seeing Brandon smile, Miranda breathed a sigh of relief. She had been brainstorming ways to make an introvert feel nice, but maybe they are not needed now. However…
‘Your clip is beautiful.’
