Background:

International students' education is one of the core contents of higher education internationalization and an important index to measure the internationalization development level of a country and a university.

Since the reform and opening up, the number of international students in China has been continuously expanding.

While the scale of international education has been developing steadily, the quality problems of the international education has become increasingly prominent.

As the front position of reform and opening up, Guangdong province, located in the coastal area and close to Hong Kong and Macao, has the strong economic foundation and geographical advantage of international education.

However, the development of international education has been slow for a long time.

The enrollment scale and hierarchical structure of international students in Guangdong is far behind its economic development.

Under the "One Belt One Road", the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and higher education’s transformation, it’s significant to solve the current problems of international education in Guangdong, explore and build the path to improve the quality of international education, which is also essential for promoting the development of the internationalization of Guangdong's higher education.

What:
Based on the considerations of practical problems, this study focuses on the learning experience and achievement of international students in Guangdong.

Based on the literature review and theoretical analysis, the study designs and compiles the International Students’ Learning Experience and Achievement Questionnaire.

Through the investigation, trial test, interviews, the questionnaire has been continuously modified and refined.

The rationality and scientific research tools are used to guarantee the reliability and validity of research.

The study has collected 717 valid samples from 12 universities and interviewed 32 students as well as 20 teachers in Guangdong.

Both the quantitative research method and qualitative research method is applied in the research, which is designed to explore the present situation, influence factors and relationship of the learning experience and achievement of international students in Guangdong.

Result:

The study found that:
1. The performance of international students in Guangdong is at the upper-middle level.

2. Different factors such as the basic characteristics, academic background, family background, life background, and learning expectations of international students in Guangdong have different degrees of impact on the experience and learning achievement of international students.

3. The structural equation model has confirmed that the learning experience of international students in Guangdong has a significant positive impact on their learning achievement.

4. The five most influential paths are: peer interaction’s positive influence on the students’ sense of commitment to the university(0.514***), classroom learning’s positive influence on the students’ sense of commitment to the university(0.412***), the input of soft educational resource’s positive influence on academic knowledge(0.374***), teacher-student interaction’s positive influence on academic knowledge(0.272***) and the input of soft educational resource’s positive influence on intercultural competence(0.259***).

The discovery of the influence path of the learning experience on their learning achievement provides evidence and reference for improving the quality of international student education in Guangdong.
5. From the perspective of development index, classroom learning (73.752), intercultural competence (71.545), the input of soft educational resource (66.696), teacher-student interaction (63.248), academic knowledge (62.525), hardware support (59.525), sense of commitment to the university (58.947), peer interaction (58.161), extracurricular activities (36.215), the scores decrease in order.

International students in Guangdong have the highest class learning development index and the lowest score in extracurricular activities, indicating that the performance of international students in class learning participation is significantly better than other dimensions, and the performance of extracurricular activities is extremely unsatisfactory.

The development index evaluation intuitively shows the current level of the study experience and learning achievements of the international students in Guangdong, and is an important reference for the diagnosis of the quality of the study process.

Suggestion:
In view of the current situation of the learning experience and achievement of international students in Guangdong, the influencing factors, the relationship confirmed by data analysis, the research proposes eight comprehensive suggestions to improve the experience and achievement of foreign students.

1. Clarify the student-oriented concept of international student education management;

2. Attach importance to the management of international students’ extracurricular activities;

3. Support the construction of international students’ interpersonal relationships;

4. Improve the construction of international students’ courses;

5. Improve international classroom teaching effect;

6. Improve the quality evaluation model of international education;

7. Attach importance to the teachers of international students;

8. Strengthen the professional planning and employment services for international students.?
