With the marathon that is updating Pixelmon to @1.16.5 coming to a close, we thought you all might be interested in a brief summary of what to expect with this upcoming version and its countless new features to experiment with. With Pixelmon 1.16.5, our developers have updated graphic rendering, improved world generation and introduced registries... just to name a few things.
Graphic rendering in 1.16.5 allowed our team to mod Minecraft displays more accurately. Pixelmon will be smoother for players on low-spec hardware. Furthermore, we overhauled UIs in their user experience and capabilities. For example, the Pixelmon Spawner block will now allow day cycling and Pokémon specs. We have also improved graphical components beyond ‘in-game’ - expanding the main menu and multiplayer screens, adding utility and favourites buttons, and most importantly, adding dancing (rarely shiny) Pokémon to load screens.
Minecraft on 1.16.5 introduced world terrain mechanics, which we took full advantage of. We completely phased out the small berry models for full trees, with a new set of woods and leaf blocks. Their growing mechanics are now more inline with Minecraft trees. Moreover, we improved the scattering of structures, utilizing the cartographer maps to help you find our rarest shrines. Ores have been overhauled, introducing new ore types and texture patterns for the visually impaired. Moving forward, Pixelmon will continue to marry our features into the Minecraft experience, bringing our players a more visually and mechanically cohesive gameplay.
The structural changes in Minecraft registries meant Pixelmon required a complete overhaul of our blocks, entities, structures handling. It also gave us the opportunity to improve API usage friendliness. To boot, registry changes forced us to rewrite our species system. This change introduced the datapacks system into Pixelmon, and exponentially increased customization potential. Content creators will be able to design new Pokémon species, forms, moves and abilities - server-sided changes which automatically sync to the client. In time, Pixelmon will extend adaptable registry support into more features, such as boss tiers, natures and Pokémon typings.
All in all, updating Pixelmon to 1.16.5 has become far more than simply a Minecraft version update. It is now the opportunity for a much needed overhaul to systems, a smoother integration of Pixelmon into vanilla, and of course, an expansion of our customization possibilities. While this small list of changes isn’t anywhere near complete, we hope it makes you all as excited as we are with Pixelmon 1.16.5.
