我國西部內(nèi)陸地區(qū)天然氣儲備豐富、東部沿海地區(qū)嚴重匱乏。為了維持數(shù)千萬東部沿海地區(qū)的家庭和工廠正常生活與運轉(zhuǎn)，國家在人們看不見的地方，建造了8.7萬千米長的干線管道，將塔里木盆地的天然氣源源不斷地輸送到全國各地，這就是西氣東輸工程（The West-to-East Gas Transmission Project）。西氣東輸工程是國家西部大開發(fā)（The Development of the Western Regions ）的標志性工程，西起塔里木盆地，東至上海，是我國距離最長、口徑（bore）最大的輸氣管道。作為一條能源大動脈，它為能源緊缺的東部發(fā)達地區(qū)送去源源不斷的“血液”。全線采用自動化控制，供氣范圍覆蓋中原、華東、長江三角洲地區(qū)。自2004年全線投入商業(yè)運營以來，西氣東輸已經(jīng)成為帶動東西及沿線經(jīng)濟發(fā)展、優(yōu)化能源結構的紐帶。實施西氣東輸工程，有利于促進我國能源結構和產(chǎn)業(yè)結構調(diào)整，為西部地區(qū)的資源優(yōu)勢變為經(jīng)濟優(yōu)勢創(chuàng)造了條件，對推動和加快西部經(jīng)濟發(fā)展具有重大的戰(zhàn)略意義。西氣東輸與西電東送、南水北調(diào)并稱為中國三大國家重點建設工程。
