He walked on, not knowing where he was going, for it was dark, so dark that not a thing was visible. Roundabout him, not a leaf stirred. A few bats skimmed his nose now and again and scared him half to death. Once or twice he shouted, "Who goes there?" and the far-away hills echoed back to him, "Who goes there? Who goes there? Who goes. . . ?" 他繼續(xù)走,不知道自己去往何處,因?yàn)樘焐寻?,暗到伸手不見五指。在他周圍,一片微微?dòng)彈的葉子都沒有。幾只蝙蝠偶爾掠過他的鼻子,嚇得他個(gè)半死。他嚷了一兩聲,“誰在那?”遠(yuǎn)處的群山報(bào)以回聲回應(yīng)他,“誰在那?誰在那?誰在······?”
