開頭吉他的嗚咽與鐘表的行走后，第一段詞由老馬的口中輕吟而出。一副畫卷緩緩展開:黃昏時(shí)分，一個(gè)士兵出現(xiàn)在眼前。他有兩個(gè)家（home），一個(gè)是戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)上的行軍山嶺，另一個(gè)則是生養(yǎng)自己承載美好的鄉(xiāng)土低地（*這里文中l(wèi)owlands原指蘇格蘭低地，這里與前文mist covered mountains作對(duì)比）。這幅畫卷中不止他一個(gè)人，還有另外的士兵在，是一位奄奄一息的傷者，此刻他正與傷者身處在這迷霧縈繞的群山之中，眼里帶著無(wú)限的思鄉(xiāng)與迷惘。而他知道傷者的生命已經(jīng)進(jìn)入了倒計(jì)時(shí)。
