And, what many people don’t realize is that Hyundai is really big on shipbuilding (yes, its revenue is comparable to Hyundai Motors). Some people might think that Korea just started shipbuilding out of nowhere but no, they were very serious in shipbuilding since 1970s. But since shipbuilding is very labor-intensive and low on ROI, I feel like they will eventually be surpassed by China in near future.

One report I came across on NY TV, don't recollect on details.

1) It mentioned S Koreans using Automation / robots to build economies of scale…. so India, China cannot compete.
2) These Robots and automation do the job much faster and do much better cutting and weld than Humans.

This will ensure Quality and economies of scale compared to other countries. Even Chile , India or Brazil.In another context , Ship Building also requires Dry docks and heavy capital infrastructure , its capital cost which the koreans has already paid off.Americans / french are good at warships , English, Dutch are best builders, that's why you see most of the Luxury Cruise Liners come from.In another documentary, ( Not China bashing intentionally guys) , But the documentary showed many orders from china being delayed or bad quality in design , welds, materials. So much so the folks who paid the deposit of these ships abandoned their orders.Can you beat Koreans at ship building, sure. Can you match their quality and cost… I don't think so , not yet at least. It could be India or china though.

Korea owns the low-tech ship building thanks to the economy of scale. Building a bulk carrier or vanilla container ship anywhere else would cost much more. They build hundreds of instances of the same design - that makes the cost of each ship unbeatable. Where the technology required is about consistency, Busan is where you want to go: quality and workmanship are great.High-tech constructions (passenger ships, aluminum-keeled fast ferries, LNG carriers, etc.) is the part of the market they have not quite cornered yet and where the competition is the hottest.

That is false. Shipbuilding industry is quite competitive among China, Korea and Japan.
