The line graph illustrates the proportion of urban population in four different Asian countries between 1970 and 2020, with projections for 2030 and 2040.
It is clear that the percentages of population living in cities have experienced a notable increase in Malaysia and Indonesia between 1970 and 2020. By contrast, the rates of Philippines and Thailand varied during these years. Overall, the levels of urbanization in the four countries are predicted to see a steady growth in the following two decades.
The percentage of urban dwellers in Malaysia remains the highest level among these four countries, with 30% in 1970 and as high as 80% in 2040. A similar increase pattern shows in Indonesia, from 15% in 1970 to 60% in 2040.
In Philippines, the figure reached a peak in 1990(about 45%) and then it declined slightly in the following two decades, showing 40% in 2010. There is a slowly climbing in the percentage of urban residents in Thailand, beginning at 20% in 1970 and ending at 30% by 2020. These two proportions are predicted to be lower than the other two countries in the future as well.
