? ? ? ?It’s true that overtime work has become an unavoidable necessity with an increasing number of industries that are fast-paced and competitive. It is sometimes argued that working hours should be restricted. I completely agree that this kind of scheme would be a good idea.

? ? ? ?There are several reasons why I would be in favor of restricting work hours. Firstly, overtime work is a potential threat to employees’ health. For example, when you work long hours, you will definitely suffer from some physical discomfort or mental fatigue. On the contrary, reducing the work hours would give employees more time to relax and exercise after the workday is done. As a result, their mental and physical health would be improved. Secondly, one of the most obvious demerits of working longer hours is the idea that doing so will upset the balance between employees’ work and life. Not having a clear boundary between work time and home time makes it easier for employees to disregard their family commitments. Arguably, this could lead to work-family conflicts. Thirdly, although some may fear this will result in low productivity, I would argue that the opposite is true. Workers who have proper rest would more easily tend to perform their work efficiently. Consequently, long hours are not necessarily productive hours.
